ModeratorFirst, yes, you can post about any tricks during any time.
This does seem to work well for him, generally keeps him more composed. Great job!
Something you might want to try is after he picks up the toy, asking for a sit and see if he can manage to get into a sit without dropping the toy. That can be another way to try to build an understanding that duration is what you are asking for.-

ModeratorGreat job with fetch to hand! That is very well done!! If you want to progress it now, she if you can try other objects. If they don’t go well, go back to the dumbbell and just build the skill with that for now.

ModeratorAbby, I think this was a great session! I like that you work to make the toy more exciting. I understand fully how difficult it is to get a dog to play around food, I think you are going down the right path for sure! I would try to be even more excited with the toy and when rewarding with the toy really take your excitement up and then when you want to reward with food, even just a bite, make yourself really boring. The food becomes less fun and they start to realize that the toy and you are way better than the food. Great work!

ModeratorYou have to upload the videos to YouTube to Vimeo and then paste to the link to the video here. Make sure the video is set to public or unlisted so I can see it.

ModeratorAwesome work!! Way to take on the challenge!! Great job!!

ModeratorI think you’ve got a great start. I’d reward her for going to the toy just a few times and then try withholding the reward until her brings it even a little closer, so she has to choose to reengage with the ball. Great start!

ModeratorThat was great work by Nick and Pepper!! I think they are ready to try to progress Fetch to hand if they want to try to make it a little more challenging. I would have Nick put either his left or right hand out to his side, put his other hand behind his back and see if Pepper will bring the toy to the hand out to the side. If that goes well, switch hands and try that side.

ModeratorYes, drop is permission to end the behavior. I use ok just because it’s already a generic permission to end behavior. But drop and give I also use, like give I use to put what is being held in my hand specifically.

ModeratorThere is some good stuff in this video! For example at 2:20, that was a great try for being at this point!
I would suggest you try to sneak a release/drop word in so he knows this is a duration behavior.
Another hold game that I play with dogs that already retrieve well is the retrieve and sit game. Have him retrieve an object and sit away from you. So this might right a target mat afoot from you so he knows where to stop. At first he might drop the toy before or while he sits, but in my experience they learn to hold onto the toy while they sit and then you can add duration from there. Hope that description makes sense. If it doesn’t please let me know and I’d be happy to make a video demonstration.

ModeratorWelcome Joyce! That’s awesome you’ve started that far on your trick journey already! If at any point you need any extra challenges beyond the 3 posted each week please let me know. I like that you use the word patience, that is definitely a word I use often in trick training. Sounds like you have a good read on your dog’s a know what you need to do to help them be happy and successful, that is great!
