Thank you, Tracy! I get the difference between the meanings. Do you think its enough to teach “switch” doing the exercise in the course, or should I start to teach it on a wing on the flat, having my dog turn away from me and move out away from me?

Also, thank you SO MUCH for the extension on the class! The weather here has definitely been more than uncooperative the last few weeks and I really would love to take my time getting through these last few exercises. 🙂 So greatly appreciated!!

Thanks so much, Tracy!! I was watching ahead to the videos for Week 3 and noticed that during the “switches” you were giving the verbal, “Switch.” Is this a verbal that just means turn away from you? I know I hear many people saying this to cue rear cross changes on courses. Would it be appropriate to use right and left verbals when coming out of a tunnel instead of “switch?”

    Thanks!!

(Weather is WET and RAINY here today and we have a trial this weekend, so we’ll be posting the rest of the exercises next week!)

Thanks so much, Tracy!! I think I was purposely trying not to move too much in these and I believe in these combos posted today, I moved a bit more– but really still not as much as I probably should be. I will definitely focus on maintaining a good handling line to the destination I want him to go. I agree that I DEFINITELY need to throw quicker. I know I am holding back because I am waiting for that commitment, which turns into completion because I am SO LATE. I think I am also holding back because its such a small space and I don’t want him to run out to the ball and hit the wall or hit the deck stuffs. Really appreciate all of your feedback!

    Sorry about the weird link!

We did the handling combos today because it is going to rain rain rain the next few days.

I really liked these exercises! I had trouble setting it up in my yard though, so I tried to be creative. I believe the wing was too close/bad angle to the first jump, so I think that is why it kept coming down. I probably should have just moved the bar to 4″ after the first bar drop.

We weren’t really able to get that threadle wrap cue, mainly because I couldn’t figure out how to execute it properly in our small space. I think I need to review that command and verbal as I don’t think we really have that skill. We have a push to the backside wrap. I will need to go back to your verbal presentation to review that one. I left in how we worked through it though! 😀

    Thanks so much!!

Verbals Around the Clock – I really focused on a couple of sessions of the verbals around the clock before digging into the handling pieces. He does so well with my motion that I wanted to really work his discriminations. However, I find that my shoulders and or feet tell him more than my verbals are. Should I be more stationary in these exercises? Sometimes I definitely need to help.

I absolutely love the challenges that come in this class! It’s been so fun to not only test him, but to really try to get my OWN verbals down pat! It’s so hard and I’m just standing there!

    Finishing up Week 1 –
    Verbal-Only Commitment – https://youtu.be/cAzHcWY8rR8
I think I need to play a little more when resetting for the exercise when he’s wrong. I was surprised he was all about the tunnel at the beginning of this one. I turned my feet toward the jump to help him be correct at about 1 min into the video. I realized my intonation was probably pretty similar to tunnel. “TUNNNNNNEL, TUNNNNEL, TUNNNNNEL” – low voice, calm-ish vs. a chirpy “JUMP JUMP JUMP JUMP” that is in a higher tone and shorter – this is going to take some practice and (verbal) commitment on my part!

At the end of the video, I was trying to help him be correct. After re-watching, I think I should have ended the training session at 2min. He was correct a good amount of times and we could have ended on a higher note.

    Handling Challenges 1 – https://youtu.be/6-xvY7fqRms
Re-watching, I already noticed I was not as chirpy as I wanted to be for the jump command. Please let me know if you think its too close to sounding like my tunnel command?

    Handling 2: Combos!
    (1) https://youtu.be/-FLUKoyGXhw – OMG chirpy tunnel command!! What is coming out of my mouth!?!
    (2) https://youtu.be/a6CfftEj_Kk – With this one I tried something a little different. We have been trialing and he has been a bit distracted when I don’t have the super-power charged toy in my hand. So I thought I would leave the toy on the ground and try the exercise and release him to it. We are still working on focus when the toy isn’t in my hand and running past, as you can see! So this one was a bit more distracted than the others. Please let me know if you have any tips on working through this! 😊
    (3) https://youtu.be/FyfSLXDpcmw – Poor buddy listening to his momma start off the exercise wrong! Not sure why he thought that was a backside. Which then got me thinking about my push command for the backside—which is “Push, Push, Push” emphasis on the P and a little staccato like the Jump command! I am just not that creative!

Hahaha, this is why *I* need training!! I totally agree that I up the ante a bit too quickly and push for harder faster. I know I need to stop doing that and let him be really good at doing it and get situated in a successful pattern. I saw that on some teeter work I was doing the other day! It is so hard not to think… well if he did so well, maybe I should… and then watch it backfire a bit WHEN I SHOULD HAVE JUST STOPPED!! He is just so talented that it is hard for me not to want to do all the things with him. And I know I am the one with the problem here and I need to stop it. Thank you so much for recognizing that for me!

As this class comes to a close, I have not tried the three-jump exercise and I’d really like to. If I keep the angles open enough, do you think I should try it? I haven’t been doing it because I didn’t want to push him, however I will greatly miss your insights as I plan to keep up with this training as class ends. And that being said– I know eventually we fade the platforms out, how often should we train this concept across his career? Is it enough that he did it once for a few weeks and now he knows? Or a little tune up here or there?

Thanks again for all your help on these!!

Hi Tracy! This is going to be a long one! Sorry!! I didn’t get a chance to upload a few of these as they were filmed.

Here are some Front/Back Side Slices:
    Back Side – https://youtu.be/PBOpjLSfZfg
    Front Side – https://youtu.be/4yvFoROFAqs

Here are our ZigZags for the week. It went better. I kept the 3′ bars. I feel like he’s still struggling with the one bounce sometimes. I did this exercise first before anything else we trained that day to try to get him at his peak. I mixed up some backsides within the regular jumps. The third video was after the first two and maybe I should have just stopped as the first two were pretty good. Too much do you think?

Finally, here are our Front/Back Side Wraps. I was going to put a yoga mat on the platform, but we have been practicing running dogwalk mat work and I was worried he might confuse the two. Let me know if you think it wouldn’t matter.

I did move the jumps up to his actual height of 8″ for some of the reps. I had it on 6″ before.

I was so looking forward to trying out the Zig Zags with your feedback. I felt like we were really going to have it together and then the training went to all heck before it even started. One, I forgot my draggy-tug, so I had to find some nasty tug toy laying around my training area. (It was stuck in a tree!) Two, when that tug was no longer desirable, I decided to use his ball. I tried to keep it on the ground, but there were times I threw it. Not sure if that was ok, but he never seemed to look at me and his head stayed down well. Three, those two changes didn’t help as I added in the backsides and made the situation more complicated. Four, I thought the camera angle would be really cool to see from this angle, but honestly it just looks like its harder to figure out what he did. Sorry about that! I will do a front side view next time!

The video is just over 7 min, but I wanted you to see the parts where I changed the set up to try to make it easier for him and then change it for the backsides. So really the video is the Zig Zags Adding Jumps and Zig Zags Backsides together. I hope that is ok as it is longer than 5 min.

No rush on getting back, I know you’re at the Open! We’ll do some organizers tomorrow and maybe finally that fun jump distraction proofing! Thanks Tracy!!

Thanks Tracy!! Do you think I should keep the bars at the 3′ length then or go to the 4′ length?

Also, good luck at the OPEN!! I totally wish we could be there, but this youngin’ is just a little too young yet! 🙂

    Hi Tracy!

I did this one last week and never posted it! D’oh! I wanted to get second zigzags in and I did it at home where I did not have the 4′ bars. So I had to use 3′. Let me know if you think those are too small. I started at the angle you suggested last time and then moved in a little flatter.

The original video was 5:49, so I tried to cut it down a bit as I know our timeframe is five min. If it is still over, it may not be done processing yet. Thankfully the extra time is me rewarding him. He’s such a good little monkey!!

    Thanks!

Thanks Tracy!! I was definitely more chill here. I will try to bring that to the other exercise!

I agree that he is powering off the board more, which is what I am hearing. I thought it was weird as I hadn’t noticed it before. I will add the mat for traction and see how that works.

I will definitely start backside first next time. He was definitely getting a little tired near the end. I was honestly surprised at how long the videos turned out to be. It didn’t seem like we were working on these for that long!

    Thank you for your feedback!

Hahaha, I will happily join the team!! And I will definitely work on my fake chill! I will be further away from the second jump for release too. 🙂 Thanks!!

And here is our Slice work!

    A couple things I noticed:

    1. He seemed to need more traction for some reason this time versus the other times. I will get a yoga mat on top of here for our next films to make sure he can push off properly. Maybe he’s going a bit too fast?

    2. I used the ball on the last couple of front side slice tries and he was faster and needed a bit more control.

    3. Our neighbor was doing something in their yard, so he was a little distracted, but I was happy he was still happy to work.
