ParticipantHere’s some more wrap work we did this morning. A bit more speed here and probably too much too soon. I still not being clear with my cues for collection vs extension and the jumps are getting bigger
Looks to me like my physical cues mean more to him than my verbal – right?
A work in progress
Tom Toomla
ParticipantWell hopefully the group is paying attention to what you are saying and not to what I am doing LOL
The video is some work we did this morning on tightening his wraps. It was at the end of a 1/2 hour session, so he’s a little slower that he was at the beginning of the session
I’m working in his check check cue, I need to teach a better understanding of it for him
Anything you would do differently?
Tom Toomla
ParticipantI have him do spins, hand touches, bopping between my right and left palm, paws up, jump up on me. he’s good with all of that stuff
Tugging, at home and while trining he’s a tugging fool, at a trial, not so much. He does have a mat that he likes, and after a couple of send to the mat. I can get him to tug on it enthusiastically – I’ll taake what I can get.

ParticipantHey Diane, hate to be a bother, but did you miss my last video post?

ParticipantYes, his behavior is better with acclimation. The problem is to him outside th ering is different from inside the ring and I haven’t figured out how to acclimate for inside the ring.
What I do, is take him out to ringside during course builds and walk thrus and play some games or do simple obedience work with a high RORI’ve also just realized that the bang of the entry gate behind him is a problem, so I’m working on counter conditioning that. We practice entries with attention and then an immediate ball toss, it’s making him happier with the gate.

ParticipantHey there Diane
Here’s a bit more FC work we did yesterday, a bit of a takeoff on one of the week 1 excercises
Rep 3, my anchor was a bit too far to my right, correct?
Rep 4, the anchor was better, so the turn was a bit tighter.
His turns on the 180 FC’s looked tight to me, not as loopy as he can be.
Was going to try some work n the yard this afternoon, but it’s raining, so you’ll probably see us again next weekend

ParticipantThanks for the diagrams, very helpful
Looking at your Top Dog sequence
FC #1 I would handle as you did, send to the wingless is my trigger, and getting to the left side of the x is my anchor.
FC #2 would be a challenge for me, which probably makes it worth trying. Not sure that I could get there, so my handling would probably be a blind between the jump and the tunnel, and that would have to be timed right. There’s a decent chance that he may get ahead of me here.

ParticipantHey there, hope you had a great holiday
Here’s some more FC work we did a couple of days ago. One of our problems with a send, is him jumping big which I believe is apparent here. I can get him to collect if I show him collection by slowing or stopping my motion, we are also working on his understanding of a check check cue. My problem is when I slow down, it’s hard to get ahead of him. The big jumps do give me time, but they also put so any off course obstacles into play.
1st sequence, third jump, he missed it because I over rotated?
The back jump, should I have used a threadle cue to help him understand?

ParticipantDealing with failure
Lord knows we have our fair share of NQ’s – things I do to help me deal with it
– Keep reminding myself that there are no failures, all we are doing is exposing new learning opportunities
– It may be a bit ritualistic, but I take the course maps for NQ runs and crumple them up and toss them in the trash
– I don’t look at NQ video’s until I get home – keep the demons away
– there is always something good that happens in any run, that’s what I think about and visualize
– And I keep reminding myself that he’s just messing with me – every single time I start getting discouraged, he says it’s time to show Tom some brilliance, sucking me right back in.Loved the class, Its good to be introspective at times.

ParticipantI took a look at the week 2 course. going to see if I can squeeze it into my tine backyard this weekend
I’m clear on the handling for 4A and 4B – if I saw the layout at a trial, I would plan on a FC
For 4C, if I saw that, I think my plan would be to turn him into the tunnel still on my left, no cross, it seems like it would put me closer to wherever the tunnel exit is taking me. Would that be wrong?

ParticipantHey there Diane
Hope the weekend is going well for you
Here’s some more FC work we did yesterday
For the first sequence, I think the trigger is the send to the tunnel and the anchor as the far green and white wing. I didn’t quite make it to the anchor point to the turn was a bit loopier that it should have been – yes?
For the second sequence, I think the trigger point is my knowing he’s committed to finishing the weaves and the anchor point was the far yellow wing
Yea, I need to work on training an independent weave finish, right now, if I cross to early, I will pull him out.

ParticipantSo we played around with send thus morning. I discovered that I have a send up to 20’, but it completely disappears at 25’. Something else to work on
I then looked again at the same a frame to tunnel cross I showed you a couple of days ago. Tried it as a FC and as a BC. The BC gives him a much better line to the tunnel yes?

ParticipantOne of my favorite BJK quotes
Be bold. If you are going to make an error, make a doozy, and don’t be afraid to hit the ball.

ParticipantSome thoughts
I like the idea of music during the walkthru – going to have to troll thru my set lists to find the right tunes.Nerves – mine – I don’t think that’s an issue for us – every time I step to the line, i think we are going to nail it, unless he starts telling me otherwise
Nerves – his – we know he can worry a bit. I know his stress signs, scratching, yawns, looking around. If I see the signs when he’s up on the line, what’s my best course of action for him? Bail on the run, or try and get thru it
Life Balance – I think I got that, and maybe too much
– work is a 50 to 60 hour week for another year or two
– training Cody – it’s my way to unwind after work, working and playing with him is one of my happy places, he knows how to make me smile
– got my boat April thru October and love fishing
– play tennis 2x a week – Wednesday with the boys and Friday nights with the wifeSome motivational quotes that I use
– you will always miss 100% of the shots you don’t take
– good players play where the puck is – great players play where the puck is going to be
– The master has failed more times than the beginner has tried -
