ParticipantI think we are almost at the end of submission time for this class. I have enjoyed it. When is the last day to submit?
I had tried the week 4 disconnection part 2 (the go line) a little over a week ago with Caper and we had trouble getting a tight enough wrap on the wing to find the first jump. I wanted to try again when I had a little more space and worked on it today. She did really good. I through in a decel on the last rep to make sure she was aware of what I was doing.
I also revisted the Week 3 combo exercise. When I had done this previously, she kept winging off to the Out jump and not following me up the line. I tried the two suggestions you gave me. She didn’t shift to the “get out” jump the first time. We are keeping these sessions really short so when she got it the next time we called it good.
Vicki Rosen
ParticipantThose are some good ideas to help her not go to the get out jump unless cued. I will try those when I am in a bigger area next time.
We did a short session on the deliberate disconnection. I wasn’t surprised that she couldn’t do the competition track since I haven’t trained the verbal for the backside to the level I will need. When we went to the Max Pup track it worked a lot better.

ParticipantYes, to the need to do the balance reps frequently.
We had a chance to go to a friends place today and work on the combos. I had given it a shot at Debbie’s but either because the set up looked odd to her or some other unfathomable factor she just couldn’t figure out what we were doing. Today we had more room and success. I have been telling myself that one direction is harder for her (which it might be) but I suspect it might be that one direction is harder for me. I wish I had remembered to put a line on the ground so I wouldn’t cross it for the get outs. She did really well one direction and then the other direction wanted to just do the get out jump regardless. We did a little work on that but fighter jets overhead and their noise had us end early.
I did want to mention I have been working with Bobbie and she has been started on meds and I think we are seeing some positive changes. Fingers crossed.

ParticipantYes, what you said does make sense. I looked at both your video and mine and my feet are definitely pointing the wrong way. I think I was so trying to get her to look me in the eye that I never really got turned. I tried again today and had more success but it is just a work in progress as she still had some going straight moments. I may not have been looking at my hands to show her where I wanted to her to go. Honestly, it is so hard to remember everything – LOL. I may need to tweak my position some more, but I wonder if she got a bit patterned to the front side of the obstacle. I will be interested to hear what you have to say.
We also tried the extreme connection games. They were fun and I was tickled that she seemed to get the idea pretty nicely.

ParticipantThanks for explaining the differences between the tandem turn cue and threadle wrap cue. I didn’t have a lot of early success with the threadle wrap. The video shows the general progression on what we did. I started backchaining and that was good, but as soon as I added the wing and some speed the front side of the jump was just so attractive to her. I removed the bar on the jump but that didn’t really help. when she would come around the wing I would attempt to make eye contact with her but she was like a missile to the front of the jump and I never felt like I was able to do that. I tried throwing the toy on the line I wanted, which worked to pull her from taking the jump but I am not sure that was the way to go. I moved the wing to make it farther away laterally but closer otherwise. That may have helped a bit but on the last rep she went around 2 wings and got it. I think my position was a bit off too. She remained so happy through all of this that that was a big win in itself.
I would love to hear how I could break this down to help her understand it better.
Vicki Rosen
ParticipantYou mentioned that she saved me a couple of times, I had seen that on the video and Brad had mentioned it when it happened. She is having better understanding of finding the lines. I am really looking forward to spring when we can get outside here and do some more work. It is really nice to feel like her understanding of lines etc. is growing.
I worked on the tandem turn-away this morning. I needed to do a bit of a refresher as to what we were doing. I feel like I am leaning over too much when I give the cue. What do you think? I am also shaking my arms a lot and not sure in running an actual course if that is very sustainable.
How are the physical cues different for the tandem turn vs the threadle wrap? I have a verbal for the threadle wrap, but she does not “know” it yet. Do you use a verbal for the tandem turn or in this scenario, would you have used a wrap verbal? I am a little worried about being able to clearly show her what behavior I am cueing. Thanks – sorry for so many questions.

ParticipantThanks for the ideas on getting the commitment to the jump before the blind. I tried the exercise you suggested (1 rep in video) and then we worked on the blind and front cross. I think my timing was better and she did just what I cued 🙂 When she is on my left and I tried the FC she went to the wrong side of the jump. I think it was because had not moved between the jumps enough to give her room, but I am not sure if that is what is happening or not. It sure was harder for me on my left than on my right.
Vicki Rosen
ParticipantThanks
>>Also, stay parallel to the bar on serps, don’t pull back
I didn’t even realize I was doing that until you pointed it out.I got down to Keith and Suzie’s to have some room to try the sends. It started out well I thought, but I couldn’t get the timing on the blind cross. She did exactly what I cued, but I am not sure when I should start moving towards the two jumps and where I should be when I do the blind. I totally dropped connection with her in doing it and although I thought she was committed to the jump something was going on. I feel like once I start the blind that I take too long to complete it and I am not sure what to do to correct that if that is part of the issue. Looking forward to your feedback. I should be able to get down there in the next week to try to finish up this exercise.
Vicki Rosen
ParticipantI have really enjoyed working on these little sequences and it is nice they can be done in a small space.
Here is our attempt at the Serp Combos. I think once I was more clear, she did well. I am curious, if you were doing this exercise for a threadle instead of a serp would the only difference be the verbal and location that you indicate the jump? Would your shoulder be even more open as they approach the threadle jump?
It will be nice if the weather cooperates enough to be able to go to Keith and Suzie’s for a bit more space to work on my timing with these sequences.Vicki Rosen
ParticipantI apologize. I posted the wrong video yesterday. It was the same one I had posted the previous day. Anyway, I am sorry for that. This is the video that I meant to post.
Vicki Rosen
ParticipantToday trying the sequences on the shifting connections, I tried to implement your suggestions and felt like she didn’t have any serious questions.
>>You can help build the skill of “take the jump that is right there” with more reward placement on the landing side (rather than back near you).
I tried to do some of this but the video doesn’t show it. Where I am asking for a wrap, would I place it near the landing side of the wing?
We worked on the last 2 sequences for this exercise and I felt good about it. I think I was being more clear with my handling.
Vicki Rosen
ParticipantThank you! It continues to be hard for me to not get “excited” about the exercise and take the time to really pay attention to what she is doing and what I am doing.
I really appreciate the information about agility in the snow. I have seen other people do it and always wondered if it was safe and then thought I would give it a try. I am so glad to know that there are real dangers to doing it. I won’t be trying that again. When I have a bit more space I will continue with the other sequences in Week 1.
Went to Debbie’s and tried the first couple of shifting connection exercises. You will see that she runs around the jump a lot. I think that sometimes it is my position, but she has had trouble jumping wingless jumps. I don’t think I ever did much of this and I have seen her in another location act like she doesn’t quite know what to do. On the one sequence I lowered the bar and that seemed to help.
Vicki Rosen
ParticipantThe feedback last time on timing is helpful. I will continue to pay attention to that and her response.
We have snow and I wanted to see if I could do the send exercise in the snow. I set the jumps pretty low and I was wearing my big boots which made moving harder. I think it was okay as far as her slipping. If you see something that indicates it isn’t safe I will try to do it at Debbie’s or some other non-snow place.
I just did the first couple of exercises and I only did one rep of each move. Would you recommend trying several reps of each part? Do I need to be closer to the second jump when I am cueing the serpentine?
Vicki Rosen
ParticipantThank you Tracy. Yes, I think rewarding her on the line is the way to go. She likes it and I do think she is getting a better idea about it too. I have always struggled getting my head turned quickly enough for the blind cross to make connection on the next side. My neck doesn’t hurt so I don’t think it is mechanical but just something I need to work on. It makes me feel better that her wide turns were just due to my mechanics.
I had already filmed stuff from today so didn’t get all of your suggestions implemented. I will be interested in what you say about the spins at the end of the video. To me they felt easy and natural and I wasn’t even sure how I did them. My arms might have been doing some free style stuff that they hadn’t asked me about, but I really thought she found the line well.
At the beginning of the video I did some exit line connection with the blind in the way you showed in your video. Still some struggling with timing.
Thanks again!.
Vicki Rosen
ParticipantThank you for the feedback. I hadn’t even thought about the blue jump being a draw to her when she was on my left. I tried it today without the jump and it didn’t seem to make a difference, but I might not have been doing a good job handling. I have that at the beginning of the this video. I also tried a holee roller as the preplaced toy, but she still had trouble seeing it. Calling her and patting my leg worked, for her to find the line, but I don’t want to build that into the normal jumping cue on a wrap like that. Is that much of a risk that that would happen?
The exit line connection hurt my brain. I walked these and walked these before I tried with Caper, but still struggled and found that I got stuck standing around. It was snowing and not super nice out while we videoed, but she was still pretty happy. I suspect a lot of the wide turns on the left hand wrap were due to my handling but I wasn’t expecting them. I need to practice this more before I put it all together for the last lesson in this week’s package. Thanks in advance for the feedback.
