Thank you! You have mentioned to me on another game to let her grab the toy and run forward. I need to remember that. It’s always interesting to me that I think I am doing something and then when I look at the video I realize I wasn’t. Do you suggest that I do one or two reps and check the video?

I just love this class and have more video for you 🙂

    Serps and Sends
We went to Keith and Suzie’s today so had great footing to work some games. I tried the send and serps again and she was pretty good starting on my left (sending to a right turn on the wing – she is a righty- and this direction is easier for her I think). I was able to have the wings straight on and I think her only miss was when I placed the toy on the treat and train – it was just too tempting. I needed to keep the jump angled more going to the left.

    Find the jump
This was our first time trying this and she liked it a lot. When we went to the left, I moved the jump further out because I thought her striding looked weird to it at 10 feet.

    Right Left Minny Pinny
I think we had some good successes on this. Should I release or throw the toy for her when she completes it?

Thank you again. So today we had a little bit of time and in one of our fields the snow has melted from near the trees. It was pretty exciting to finally do something outside!

    Set point
I started with the jumps set 5 feet apart and then expanded it to 6 feet. Let me know if we are doing it right and if her form is okay.

We gave her a little break and then I brought her out for a bit of send and serps. I left the jump angled to help her be successful. She was pretty wound up and distracted because one of our cats had come to visit and she thinks her job is to keep an eye on cats and hopefully herd them. She still was pretty happy so I figured that distraction might be a good thing to work through. In reviewing the video, I am not sure I had my chest open enough to the bar, but was pleased with how she did.

We tried the Serps and Sends again with mixed success. We probably should have angled the jump. She really tries.

I wrote this yesterday but forgot to submit it. I sure enjoyed class last night and Debbie and I always have fun with or without the wine but the wine is an extra! I am headed to Suzie’s for a lesson.
I had one question regarding last night. On the last exercise, where the wings were all lined up and we pushed and pulled the dogs through them from a distance, does it matter which arm you use to pull them? It seemed like in your video you used the near-side arm (the one close to the wings) but several of the students in the class used their offside arm. What are your thoughts on that?

    Thanks for the feedback.
That’s a really good idea to try running the course to practice handling and verbals. It all happens so quickly with Caper that I get flummoxed, but I think running it in advance should help.

I am so glad I asked about jumping Caper. I worried that she might be too young/immature but I have to say the driving force is not so much social media but weather. If we have another winter like this one it really shortens the time I have to train here and I was getting panicky about all that I would like her to be introduced to by the time she is two. Would you recommend waiting until she is 16 – 17 months for introducing her to any contacts or can that start earlier?

Thank you for the feedback. I have been doing walk throughs and saying the words but then I struggle remembering what I was going to do and what the verbal is etc. Sort of funny – sort of not funny. So much to remember!

I saw your answer to Sandi about tomorrow’s live class. I think I will just do it at Debbie’s. I had thought about going to Keith and Suzie’s but the weather is still iffy and I worry what the roads could be like. Thank you for thinking about those of us in winter’s death grip.

On one of your verbal webinars you answered someone’s question about jump training and you mentioned Nina Gregl and Fanny Gott. How much jump training is dealt with in the MaxPup class? I have been thinking about starting one of these with Caper but I don’t know if she is too young for something like that (she is 13 plus months old now). Do you have any thoughts on that you could share?

I feel very rusty. It’s been a while since I could practice.

    Tunnel Exits
I had asked you about her at times flailing when I hold her collar and say the verbal. You suggested I stop the verbal until she stops flailing. I am not sure she was really flailing and I worry that I did this incorrectly. Let me know. But, I think Caper was super and this was really fun.

    Smiley Face
My first time getting to try this and she did really well I think. We both had fun and someday we won’t still have 2 feet of snow on the ground and I will be able to practice regularly. Ha!

    Thank you for the feedback.

I have a couple of more short videos.

    Set point
I tried this from both sides. The distance is 5 feet and I would love feedback regarding her form and if this distance looks about right.

    Wind in your hair again
There isn’t a ton of room to really get moving, but I tried to implement several of the suggestions you made on the first one. When I hold her collar and say her verbal – she gets a little nuts. Should I keep holding and saying it even if she is super aroused or let her go when she starts pulling and going a little nuts?

    Thank you!!!
Wednesday night’s class was so much fun.

The feedback on these videos is so helpful. We are gone all next week and I have talked to the weather gods and been assured that snow will be sort of gone (maybe) and I will be able to practice at home when we get back Hopefully, I can then implement the new improved handling right away. 🙂

When you told me about my FC spin instead of using a post-turn, I could totally see how that was cueing her to turn out of the tunnel.

I have to say, I am so glad that class is starting up again. YAY!!

These are probably the last videos before the next class. I tried to keep everything very short but to put into practice some of your suggestions.

    Wing wraps
I tried to add more connection to the wing wraps. I didn’t use verbals and tried to have a little more distance. I have included all of our reps.

    Rocking Horse
I hadn’t tried the rocking horse with more distance and the race track since you made suggestions to improve it. I really thought she did great – a couple of questions when I tried to move to quickly and my first effort at the blind was very late. She was a good girl. All reps shown.

Finally, some tunnel work. I wanted to work on her go tunnel, go tunnel and threw in a wrap. I finished off with a couple of double whammies where on one I walked forward and I did one where I asked her to come with me instead of doing the threadle. She impressed me. Again, I showed everything.

Thank you for the feedback. That makes sense on the flyball turns that on the over and back I should just be rewarding the one side. I can also make the board more stable.

The volunteer wing wrap is something that I think I can do in the driveway or maybe in the house so I can try those suggestions.

Today we revisited a couple of games.

    Double Whammy
I was really happy with her performance.

    A couple of games

    Flyball turns
I tried the flyball turns. Hmmm, doesn’t look like your video.

Shaping the wing wraps. I think she didn’t quite know what to do without my foot forward or something to indicate take it. Would it be good to work on this so she does offer it without those indicators?

    A couple of games

    Tunnel Rocking Horse
We seemed to have a lot more success. The position of the wings really helped. This was all of the session except for the tugging in between. I did a much better job of maintaining connection while we played.

    Rear Cross revisited
I hadn’t worked on this in quite a while. I need to practice my throwing. I used food since it is a little less arousing but would a toy be good to use on this? I couldn’t remember if you tried any of these between wings or not.

Thank you for the reminder on staying engaged and rewarding. I know better and it is something that I notice others not doing and then I didn’t do it either. Crap. She totally needs me to engage with her and to try to avoid her getting frustrated.

I felt like last time I tried that Tunnel Rocking horse that she did better to her right although this time to her left so I am still not sure if she is a lefty or righty.

I do have a question about my verbals on this. Since I was struggling to beat her to the other end of the tunnel and to cue the wrap, I was giving her her wrap verbal as she entered the tunnel. On my drive down to practice yesterday, I listened to the verbal webinar you gave a few weeks ago. It sounds like the wrap verbal before she enters the tunnel should be for the tunnel and I should give the wrap verbal for a jump just as she exits the tunnel. Since this is an early game and the wing is super close, is it okay to give the wrap verbal as she enters the tunnel or should I try to deliver it just before she exits the tunnel?

You asked if I did pattern games while others did the recalls – I was the only one who did recalls, but I tried to do the pattern game when Julie was working Mitre. She couldn’t break her gaze from the other dog moving. I don’t know if we were at opposite ends of the arena if that might be enough distance but I am not sure it would be. She can get sort of stuck staring when she sees motion like that. I can see progress but it is very slow and I have to have a lot of distance.

Thanks again! I have loved this class and it has really helped me stay focused on working with her. Once we can work outside at our place it will make things easier.

    Had a fun training session.

    Flyball recalls
I think I did a better job this time, but not sure why she returns on my off side. When the other dog was out she was just fixated on him (I don’t know if you can see that or not), but once I started running she focused on me. This was short and I have all the reps shown.

    Lateral lead outs
She was such a good girl. I could tell that my earlier work where I always though the reinforcement forward had her thinking that was what she should do, but after the first one she did great. I am a little bummed because I set up the camera to do the other direction but didn’t get it turned on. She did really well.

    Tunnel Rocking Horse
We had to go back to basics a bit because I couldn’t get the second wrap. Keith repositioned the wing to make it easier for her to find the second wrap and then she was great and understood what I wanted. I really struggled getting to the other end and showing the decel and getting the dog side foot forward = but she was super.
