ParticipantAlso, an opinion question. Would you do knee jumps with her? Or is that too high? She really likes jumping back and forth over my knees for a tug toy. Here she’s doing it for food.

ParticipantTotally agree about Operation Swallow. This is driving *me* crazy. If she’s not really hungry, she’ll dash after a thrown treat and then bring it back to eat it slowly. I’m not sure what part of her pedigree it is from. I had her aunt for a while, and it wasn’t an issue, so I assumed that it was from the pap side. But, it doesn’t really matter where it is from, I guess. I also agree with your assessment of the paw targeting issue. I think she doesn’t have a good basic understanding of the concept, so it falls apart. I tried doing it with just tug rewards to see if she was “higher” she’d be better about, but that only improved things slightly. I suspect she thinks the game is as much about hitting *me* as it is about the target in her mind. So away from me she’s not really sure what she’s doing. I will back it up a few steps and work really basic paw-to-target with reward on the target itself.

ParticipantJust FYI, Zest is annoyed at you for suggesting a narrower plank. 😉 She was like, what is this foolishness?

ParticipantExciting news! We have the beginnings of a back up

ParticipantSame game with small tug toys

ParticipantHere’s the retrieve I get when I use a very small, very light toy in a small space. She will happily run out to larger toys, but I think she hesitates to bring them back if they are bigger than she is. 😉

ParticipantAnd finally, a problem we’re having that I don’t quite understand. She’s fine with a paw target (hit it) when the target is on my body, but if I move it away from my body or attach it to something vertical like a wall, she shuts down. Here I’m trying to move it away from me just slightly, or put it near something less intimidating than a wall. Mixed results, as you can see. I had to go back to the floor to get her to re-engage at one point.

ParticipantCatching up…

ParticipantBowl game (starting to move the cone out slightly) and goat game on a wobbly object.

ParticipantPlease excuse bad videography again.

ParticipantHere’s our work on the hat trick, which she picked up very quickly, and our very first attempt at sends. Not totally crazy about her turning it into a drop, but I assume we can work that out over time. We also did Martina’s 2 Bowl game (I forget what we’re calling it here) for the first time and she got that in a flash. I’ll try to tape step two.
Also tried taking the show on the road to a petstore. She wasn’t willing to work avidly for food, but we were able to get some basic work for a tug. (She above — paps and play>food).

ParticipantYes, the pap makes for many new experiences. When she came home at 8 weeks she was NOT interested in working for food. Like, would not even push over a plastic cup to get stinky cat food. I was quite worried. Happy as a clam to play-play-play, but food, eh … not so much. I’ve also noticed that weirdness about walls and interacting with something up against a wall. Huh? Alrighty then. Yet, oddly, no issues with going through narrow passages.
We did start working on touching the harness (and also touching while tugging).

ParticipantWill be working on the other games, but here are a few “overlaps” from the Week 1 games.

ParticipantWhile I get my videos together, a quick question about the pre-games. I’ve been working on nose touch to my palm, and paw touch to a small item held in my hand. I’m worried that a nose touch to item in my palm *right now* might be confusing. Can I just use my palm for the time being until the paw touch to target is trained to the point of being on cue?
Wendie Schneider
ParticipantHi, here’s some work on the harness grab and touching-while-tugging issues
