ParticipantI did the Transition to Trials with Select and used a toy for some of his “get excited” behaviors. I’m working on our chill behaviors — at home when we just chill we are both normally laying on the couch. I brought out food to bring down the level of excitement for the second half. I’m teaching “chill” with his muzzle in my hand right now so I’m still using quite a bit of food.

ParticipantI have been trying to work without “flicking” my hand. I did it once this session, but it seemed better the other reps.

ParticipantHere is Taken starting the threadle wrap. I’ve never broken it down to the first steps with him so it was really good for both of us!

ParticipantSelect is getting a tiny bit more freedom so I went back to do Package 1 Transition to Trials with him. I didn’t want to let him off leash because I have a feeling he will go take some laps around the yard and that isn’t allowed yet. But here is what we have so far:

ParticipantOoooh, I’ll make sure to reward much less specific behaviors and any interaction when we are on the road so his rate of reinforcement is MUCH higher.

ParticipantWe gave the Transition to Trial a try with a little pod. A couple sessions building value for the pod and we quickly went outside tonight… agility equipment and Taken were used as distractions.

ParticipantThese tighter turned BCs are definitely something we will have to practice.
Gah! I had no idea my arms got so high on stuff! That is another thing I need to keep and mind and I’ll be working on it. I just did a training sessions with Taken working “in, in” on a wing for the threadle/rear and I was having lots of issues until I lowered my hand more. He read that so much better! Of course, I didn’t hit record so I didn’t get to tape it even though I had the camera out there and everything. So annoying. I’ll try again tomorrow. I never really taught threadle cues to Taken. Select, on the other hand, learned both a wrap and a push at a young age. He will be ready for those once we see them in courses (when he can run courses again).Whitney Peluse
ParticipantQuestion about Game Package 3 Transition to Trials… the thing that we are creating value for… can it be a part of our body? Like resting their chin on our hand? Or a simple nose touch? Or does it have to be a different object?

ParticipantWe ran a couple sections of this course again today, but I’m not sure it was all that much better.
I wanted to work on the BC 7-8, but Taken definitely didn’t read it all that well. I seemed to be either too early or too late. After he stumbled on our 2nd attempt, I wanted to try the other direction which is why I was doing that. I try not to do too many reps one way.
I did a few reps with the push to 10 and he was reading that nicely when I kept my arm lower which kept my shoulders/chest in the right direction.

ParticipantThank you for the feedback!
I’ll try to run this again later today (or parts of it, at least) and see how it goes with a BC at 7-8.LOL – I may have said “holy mother of god” in a moment of wanting to kick myself. Poor Taken is so patient with me.
Very interesting thought about my chest/shoulders! Of course they are attached to my arm, but I didn’t think about that when my arm is higher it completely rotates my upper body. That is something I will work on and definitely think about in my training. Thanks!Whitney Peluse
ParticipantI tried the Jumping Course 2 today. Oh boy, we were both riding the struggle bus in a major way!
Here are the running parts of our training session. I don’t know what was going on with the weave entrances, but that was much more difficult for him than I expected. I was going for a rear cross at 0:57 because I wasn’t in position for a FC/BC, but that didn’t work. LOL. He was a bit tired by the end, but we ran it one last time and got through it. Neither one of us can be out there training very long.

ParticipantIt was GREAT to do the timing of the softer turns vs the tight turns and great to know that they are a bit faster. I haven’t timed him in ages and every bit of a second helps!
I totally didn’t even notice that in sequence 3 where I was facing the tunnel at 10 and that absolutely caused the bar.
Thanks for the feedback — much appreciated!

ParticipantI got a quick training session in before the rain — perfect timing because it looks wet for the next couple of days. Here is our entire training session (I cut out playing and walking around).
Seq 1:
I tried to make sure I was closer to the tunnel exit so that 8-9 was a stronger turn cue. I also gave a much softer wrap cue at 11. I tried to time the exit of 10 to the entrance of 12 between the 2 runs and I did get 2 tenths of a second faster. I have no idea how to overlay them or put them side by side so I’m not sure how accurate that is.Seq 2:
I did a softer turn cue at 4.
I pulled him off of 7 (bad handler!). I realize that my FC from 8-9 was directly on his line, but I didn’t notice that until we were done and I watched it on my computer. I did a FC instead of a BC because I was concerned about him pulling off 7 again. I just needed to be deeper so I wasn’t right in his way where he had to run around me. Ooops.
I timed the exit of 3 to the entrance of 5 — I had less than one tenth of a second difference, but that was just timing it with my eye. How do you do side by side or overlay them?Seq 3:
I did a couple reps at #2 and he had no issues with it — guess we haven’t practiced those in a while. I think his turn from 8-9 was definitely better than the first attempt. I did give him a turn cue so that helped. I’m not sure why he pulled the bar on 10, but when I said “get it” he took his toy and ran to the pool and then dropped it into the pool. LOL! So our training session was over 🙂 I would normally have fixed the bar, but he isn’t a huge bar knocker and he seemed to want to swim instead… so, of course, we swam!-

ParticipantThank you for the feedback! It has been raining all morning, but once things dry I’ll try and get out there again this afternoon or tomorrow. It’ll be interesting to do some timing (I haven’t done that with him in ages) and see how things look with tighter turns vs a bit more speed/wider turns. I’ll let you know!

ParticipantVery good point about throwing the first cookie as soon as we walk into the environment. I totally missed that.
I will definitely be more prepared and have cookies ready in my hands. I agree, he was looking at the cheese a lot and I want to make sure I don’t muddy the waters for him on what I’m asking. Great suggestion.
I will get him into some more distractions to keep working on this and make it a bit tougher each time. I’ll let you know how it goes!
