ParticipantI did all 3 Sequences for Success with Taken. Here were our 1st attempts on all 3 sequences. We definitely had an “oops” on the 3rd one, but they were decent besides that. A couple wide turns towards the end, but let me know what you think.

ParticipantI added some distractions for Select to make the Transition to Trials a tiny bit harder. Nothing crazy, but the toys and Taken were a little bit harder. I think my cheese won 🙂

ParticipantOooooh, great idea about doing this game near the weaves — I never even thought of that!
He has spins to the right/left, but I’m still a bit nervous to do those until his ultrasound in a couple weeks. He also has a back up that is “OK”… I wouldn’t call it super strong, but I can try that one.
Yes, I definitely get sloppy with my rewards/markers — I will make sure to keep working on that! We’ll take this on the road and I’ll let you know what we get 🙂

ParticipantThis is the most uncontrolled activity that Select has had since Feb. I’d be interested in an “out” if he isn’t required to do a lot of activity/movement yet. If it requires more, I might wait for a few more weeks yet. He gets another ultrasound towards the end of July and I’ll know a lot more then about what he can do going forward.
You crack me up! Definitely good to have some of these tools in the tool box. Yes, I think the threadle wrap cue will be happening more and more. I totally agree with that! I, actually, started to teach it to Taken although his cue isn’t nearly as good as Select’s.
I agree. If I can use the same soft turn cues on the DW and on jumps that will be great! And very easy to transition from one to the other once I start working those. Sounds good!! 🙂

ParticipantSelect got to do the Transition to Trials and he loved it! We did part 1 and part 3 in the same session since I thought he did nicely with the basics I wanted to challenge him a bit. We will bring it on the road or make it more difficult in the next couple of days.

ParticipantNo, I haven’t made an “out” cue for Select yet.
I haven’t done a weave threadle cue yet, but I’ve thought about it. Honestly, Select’s weaves were very slow and “stressy” before he got hurt so we didn’t do a lot of weave training. Do you find you use this cue a lot? I’ve never felt like I really needed it with Taken, but am certainly open to it.No ‘soft’ collection cues on jumps, but I’ll be working on soft cues off the DW. I’m going to use “Ley” and “Rah” (basically the first part of Left and Right).

ParticipantI just started looking through Games Package 2 and wanted to give you a list of my verbals. Taken has very few verbals, but Select has a lot so here are Select’s:
Our new sit/stay at the startline (after your class): “line up”
Release word: “free” or the name of the obstacle I want him to take
Wrap a jump to the right: “seek”
Wrap a jump to the left: “wrap”
Jump straight: “jump”
Turn away from me / rear cross: “turn”
Traditional threadle: “here”
Threadle to rear cross: “in”
Tunnel cue (obvious side): “tunnel”
Threadle tunnel: “chute”
Turn to me after tunnel: “quick”
Back side of jump (slice): “get back”
Back side of jump (wrap): “push”
dogwalk: “walk it”
dogwalk exits: “go go go”, “right”, “left”
AFrame: “A”
Teeter: “teeter”
Bypass: “come” (this is a work in progress)
Weaves: “weave”
Table: “table”Whitney Peluse
ParticipantI set the Standard course (package 1) and meant to run it, but the weather didn’t cooperate before my trial this weekend. Taken had a bit of a spill off the DW so I’m going to the chiro tomorrow to get the “OK” before we do any work again. He looks OK, but I’m a worry wart… especially with the older guys!

ParticipantWe did a session this afternoon — I worked the teeter and the dogwalk. I tried to wait Taken out a bit on the teeter until he got into his 2o2o position. I forgot to run straight through without any fading so I did 2 reps of that this evening and he was great. For the DW, I don’t often run the full thing in training so here is just us practicing the 2o2o end position. I tried to stay behind and have him go forward. Not great — LOL! He kept coming to the side a bit, but I’ll see how he does in the course work when I run it (probably next week). I’m pretty cautious about the reps we do on the DW and the weaves so I don’t do those often in training (which is why I only worked the end position here).
Whitney Peluse
ParticipantYes, Taken’s criteria on the teeter (as well as the DW) is a 2o2o. I have definitely noticed in the few trials that we have done recently that he has made his own criteria (sometimes even to running!) and I’ve been terrible about correcting it. Bad mom! I’ll do it again and make sure I get the 2o2o even when I’m not driving forward. Definitely always call me out on that because I am totally a “lazy trainer” at times and I don’t always notice it.

ParticipantI skipped over the Transition to Trial portion as I am hoping to do that with Select later in the Summer so this is Taken’s Skills Set from today. Here are all of our reps (4 on teeter and 4 on weaves), but I took out the time in between.

ParticipantSelect is doing great, but the ultrasounds have showed that he hasn’t healed quite as quickly as we hoped/expected. So, rehab is going a bit slower than any of us wanted. Ugh. I know you understand that pain! He might possibly get to do some short drills towards the end of class — fingers crossed!
Taken is thrilled to be working and it’ll be good for both of us! We do tend to get a little sloppy/lazy these days since I just assume he can count numbers at this point in his career. Haha!Whitney Peluse
ParticipantAFrame – do you use the same verbals/directionals after AF? Do you use your straight command? I’ve never done that before on the AF and wasn’t sure if you do it regularly or if your motion just covers that.
Full height DW – You have a blue mat on a blue contact in the “New Lesson” video. Is that intentional? Do you do that and then fade the mat all together? And just use vet wrap for a bit? Once a dog is pretty solid at the RDW, do you regularly train with the mat on to keep the behavior solid?
When you start trialing with young dogs, how much marking/praise are you doing in the ring? Do you mark/reward every one or do you just keep running?
Thanks!

ParticipantLesson 5, The Low Dog Walk — There is definitely a large difference in Riskee’s performance between the 2 videos. How do you know when to add the wing instead of the MM or static toy? Do you wait for that drive to increase before adding the wing or was that because of the wing and toys being used? Did you do anything to increase speed and have her extend stride or did it just naturally happen with more practice and confidence?
Adding Verbals & Motion — when you are rewarding are you always using a verbal marker? Do you use a clicker anymore at this point? When you are giving directional verbals on the top ramp, when do you give the obstacle verbal? Or do both verbals happen on the top of the DW?
The Wing Game — do you always have the dog come to your direction for the slight turns? I didn’t notice you push away (i.e. if dog was on your right asking them to go to the far right wing). Is “turn” taught later where the dog flips away from you?
I notice you have Riskee lay down when she misses. My guy is very soft. Frankly, when we were working RDWs last Summer I could only do 4 or 5 reps and he would be done. Speed would decrease and he’d start to break stride throwing in trots periodically. I’m afraid to really mark if it’s a miss (I just withhold a reward) and ask him to “try again”. Should I be trying a different consequence for misses?
Thanks!
Whitney Peluse
Participant– For “Collection Exits & Turning Away”, is the mat the same size or did you make it smaller?
Is it just laying on the DW or did you attach the target somehow? Mine seems to slip/move if I just lay it on top of the plank.-“The Low Dog Walk”… I noticed that the mat is significantly smaller in size now. Are we rewarding just 1-2 feet hitting the mat now? Do you recommend the mat be the same color as the contact zone at this point?
Thanks! 🙂
