ParticipantHi there! So, we have been struggling with serpentines for a long time. So much so that I gave it up because I was getting frustrated. Here are today’s videos. It took me a couple of reps to remember to freeze, set him back up, and get the correct behavior so that I could reward. We also tried various barriers to keep him from making mistakes.
After all that thinking, we decided to do something more fun, and ended on that.
Looking forward to feedback! Thanks.

ParticipantI did a quick session on the bending grid today. I switched to using food, changed the distance from 6 feet to 5 feet and tried to give him a straighter approach to the first jump. Still having issues.

ParticipantI have always tended to err on the side of rewarding too much! I sometimes get confused about when NOT to reward, so I end up making mistakes. The struggle is real. And yes, that was Brenda keeping me honest! On the “go” “Ro” question, I am using his name, but I say “Robie” and not “Ro.” I think I emphasize the first syllable, so that’s likely what you’re hearing. I am so so bad at the verbals, that I don’t think there is the slightest possibility that I’ll ever be able to replace “go” with anything else. I moved the jumps up to 12″ for some of the easier stuff. Did that look ok? Thanks for the great feedback as always! Looking forward to revisiting these exercises this week!

ParticipantOops, almost forgot I had another question. I understand when I am introducing a new skill that I should keep the bars low. Do you think it is time for me to raise them in some of the drills where he is more experienced? Right now, I am mostly still using jump bumps or 8 to 10″ bars for everything. I just want to be smart about when and where to raise them. Thanks!

ParticipantWe decided since it is going to rain for the next 3 days, that we would work on the same exercises (while trying to incorporate your always marvelous feedback!)
Ladder grid with motion (side view, pre-placed toy):
Wing wrap grid with more motion (I posted all 5 reps. Dropped the bar twice):

I think I am still reaching back too far into the landing side. I am also struggling with the across body reward, but I realized after doing these that you were actually tossing the reward ahead across your body in your videos. I was trying to run with it across my body, which feels weird and I ended up switching hands.
CONGRATULATIONS ON THE NEW PUP! Name?

ParticipantHi Tracy. Worked on the week 2 exercises today. Here are the videos.

I don’t think the motion bothered him much. Think I could progress to running?Wing wrap to grid:

I completely forgot the across the body reward on this one!Elizabeth Woodhouse
ParticipantHere are today’s sessions. On the jump grid, we started at 15’ for one rep, then went to 18’, which is where he was successful the last session. It was at 21’ last session that he added an extra stride. So, the last 2 reps were at 19’. Extra stride. Not sure what to do next.
Also worked on the send and go pinwheel. My verbals are just god awful, but I think he did pretty well. I got the middle jump out there pretty far.

Regarding my FC question, Gunnar is injured so I can’t demo with him. I will play with that tomorrow. Who knows? Maybe Scarlett will make an appearance!

ParticipantWill do! Thanks!

ParticipantQuick question about front crosses. You said in your explanation that you cue it with dog side arm and leg. For the past year or so, I have been trying to cue them with the opposite arm and leg (mostly leg), without much rotation on my part. I find that I can get out of there faster, and it has resulted in less refusals with Gunnar. He would sometimes pull off of jumps when I used dog side arm and leg. Do you have any thoughts on this?

ParticipantRound 2! When I start working on the send and go, can I still use the tunnel, or take it out?
Thanks!

ParticipantWe worked on the grid today, too. I did 2 reps at each of the 3 distances. I had the first 3 jumps set at 6” and the double set at 10, at first. He knocked a bar at the 18 ft distance, so I dropped it to 8”. Question: is the second pinwheel exercise dependent on the first, or can that be worked on separately?

ParticipantHi there! So glad to be back. I have to say that I really like your new posting guidelines. I am one who is sometimes guilty of making my training sessions too long. These new guidelines will keep me honest, lol!
On the first rep, I see that I was using my arms too much. Tried to fix that. On the second rep, when he took the opposite end of the tunnel, I wasn’t really sure what to do in the moment, but I wanted to be able to reward him. Was that the wrong thing to do? I assumed it was because I had lost connection (looked at the tunnel instead of him.) The very next rep I tried to look at him and he got it right. Lmk if you see something different.

ParticipantHi there. We worked on the deceleration exercise today. I haven’t posted as much video lately because my internet connection has really slowed down! It took about an hour to upload this one, ugh!
