ParticipantSounds good. Plenty of other stuff to work on. I dont think he’s been jumping that frequently. He will be a year old in 10 days!!! I can’t even believe it.

ParticipantYes, it was the 6,7,8,9 spacing. And I did go back to reward the stay. I’m pretty sure I was smiling and saying “good wait.” I only did those 4 reps, so would it be ok to do a couple more this afternoon? I will try to find a better angle.

ParticipantHi there. I set up the Progressive Grid today. Sorry if it’s hard to see all the jumps. I had a hard time figuring out where to video from. I will probably post a little more later. I’ve been trying to keep the sessions super short and fun!

ParticipantHi there! Worked on just teaching the soft turn L/R verbals on the MP. I have just started teaching these cues, so I expect it will take a few sessions before I can move on to more advanced criteria. Clearly, he has a harder time with the left turns. I caught myself helping him with a step a few times.
I also revisited the Rear Cross with SUCCESS!!! I will try some left turns next time.

ParticipantWell, I got Shane out there today to be my thrower, and he was a HUGE distraction. Robie was pretty consistently going around the first 2 jumps on the RC exercise. I have video if you want to see it. After a couple of failures, I decided just having Shane out there as a distraction while we trained some other stuff might be helpful. It was really hard for Robie!
It’s funny that you mentioned the “Ro” thing. Melanie said the exact same thing! I didn’t think I called him that! Sometimes I call him “Robes,” but I didn’t think I was doing that in training! I will have to go back and listen. SO MANY THINGS!

ParticipantHi there. I worked on the deceleration and rear cross exercises today. I’m not sure how much longer we have to post video, so I at least wanted to get feedback on all the exercises. I still have a LOT of homework to do on most of the other ones!
On the deceleration, I found I had the most success when I placed to toy instead of tossing it. I also tried facing him more and switching the toys. On the rear cross, I am certain that my verbals were not terribly timely. Also, I haven’t really taught him my soft turn cues yet (swing and turn.) In the past I have worked mostly on the tight turn verbals. I taught these originally on the flat, first in front of me and then at my side (turning both ways) and then while walking. Then took that to a wing and eventually a jump. What should I be doing to teach the soft turn cues, mini Pinny? But back to the RC, I am thinking it will help tremendously to have SHANE throw the toy for me so I can focus on mechanics and verbals. Will try that later.

ParticipantHi there. I worked on the Turning Criteria and revisited the Rocking Horses today. I wanted to change my words to “Leeeeft” and “Right Right,” but I forgot! Before I go any further, I just wanted to make sure my mechanics are somewhat correct. And I also wanted to show you my problems with the Rocking Horses. I was trying to reward more often. I don’t think I had this much trouble the first time I did it!

ParticipantHi there! Thanks for the feedback on balance. It’s easy to forget to train the “easy” stuff and focus on the “hard” stuff. Lord knows, I don’t need another slow dog, lol! I tried to incorporate some balance training into my “drive out of tunnels” work today. Lmk what you think. I had actually intended to work on the rocking horses parts 2 & 3, but I was having issues with the toy in my hand, so I changed gears, and will wait for your feedback. I have had to work pretty hard on Robie’s toy play during training. He used to either lose interest completely fairly quickly or become so stalky that he couldn’t even do a nose touch. I am beyond thrilled with what we have achieved. We can now do entire training sessions for just a toy, or easily switch between food and the toy. I am having the most trouble when the toy is in my hand for longer periods of time and I am moving (like with the rocking horses.) I know you have said to use a lower value toy, but I am worried that I will ruin what I have worked so hard for, lol! I’m sure that is just stupid, but there you have it! Anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, one question on the Threadle. Can you clarify what you mean by a Threadle/RC cue? Thanks! We are having so much fun in this class.
Drive out of Tunnels:

ParticipantWe worked on the Threadle today. We have done this before with a jump (both wings and a jump bump) and we used 2 treats (one for coming to hand and one for taking the jump.) We have also put it into some teeny sequences (with Anastasia Egorova) where we would wrap a wing, cue the Threadle, move to the other side of the jump, wrap a wing and cue the Threadle again. So this is not new for us.
Elizabeth Woodhouse
ParticipantI have a question on the serp and threadle setup. What is the reasoning behind only using one wing?
Elizabeth Woodhouse
ParticipantHi there. We worked on the ladder grid and driving out of tunnels this morning. We started having trouble with the grid when I added the fifth jump. On the tunnel drill, I think I was late quite a bit in the verbal “go” and I don’t think I did a very good job of increasing lateral distance until the end. I need to put some kind of marker out there to run towards, lol.
Elizabeth Woodhouse
ParticipantThanks for the great feedback! Shane will be happy to have a job.

Go!

ParticipantOn the serp, I just want to clarify where you want the reward placed. So pretend there is a second jump out there and place the reward on the “landing side?” Also, what height should I put the bars for the mini pinny? And third question is can I have someone else throw the toy on the “Go?” It feels so awkward, especially from the left hand, lol.
Elizabeth Woodhouse
ParticipantThanks for the feedback! I did the Mini Pinny exercise again, moving the jumps closer, and trying out some new verbals. I also set up the serpentine exercise, intending to try out your suggestions, but he did so much better today that I forgot! Then we tried the GO exercise. Let me just say that my left hand is virtually useless.
