Adjustable Stride Grid – Drive ahead to Toy – 8/20/20

So posting this as an example of his improvement in driving ahead to a dead toy. Granted it’s his favorite Nemo ball, but he’s come a long way from not being interested in dead toys at all. I had done some ladder grids with him back in June and was having issues getting the right reinforcement at the end of the grid. He was doing best with a treat on a target. I took a break from the bumps during Max Pup Summer camp, but circled back a few weeks ago and lo & behold – he’s driving ahead to a dead toy!

This was a much longer session as I was moving the jump around and doing some catch games to reward his sit or tossing Nemo for him after he grabbed it, but he also stayed focused on what I was doing for about 6-1/2 minutes.I just cropped it down to his actual grid performance.

    Backside Slice/360 – 9/15/20
I think I had better timing on crossing his path in the backside 360. Got a front side when I didn’t have my shoulder back enough, but didn’t get the rear cross. And I like the “circle-circle-circle” cue better.
My aim in tossing the toy in the backside 360 is a bit off but I think I am doing better on getting it in sooner (well first one was late and he had to turn back for it, but he’s coming in over the 4in locked bar). I think I had better aim and timing on the reward placement in yesterday’s session, but that one went a bit long and would require cropping so I’m being lazy and uploading the short session instead.

Did a parallel path at the end. It’s hard for him to keep focusing forward when I have his favorite Nemo ball in my inside hand tempting him, but I did like how he turned his focus forward again after flicking his gaze to my left hand holding Nemo

On another topic, are we going to do any circle work games in the next session? Because I’m seeing something there that I’d like your input on, but I can hold it for the next session if it’s coming up anyway.

Reposted a different link for the 9/9 post. Took 3 tries to get YouTube to behave.

    Backside Slice & 360 – 9/9/20
Yup – definitely using my motion for a FC or to move away from the jump to come in over the bar on the backside slice. When I kept moving parallel for a serp he went around it. Should the reward be dropped more on the exit line of a slice/serp or closer to the first standard which I did to hopefully help make it more obvious that he should come over the bump.

Got some interesting extra spins on the backside 360 and not really sure why.

Threw in a parallel path at the end and was happy to see he still remembered that after all the backside fancy moves we’ve been focusing on.
Also happy to report that he has no issues working in a drizzle with me in a raincoat.

I had a smaller bump when I was on vacation. I went back to the bigger more obvious one here. He’s almost 11 months so I can also add a very low bar too, but didn’t want to change too many things when test his understanding of coming back over the bump.

And I decided that even with an “ah” to preface the “nah-nah-nah”, that I don’t think it’s different enough from lalala. So I did a session later (inside since it was dark already!) and started using “circle-circle-circle”.

    With new video

    Backside Slice & 360 – 9/5/20
OK -had to use the cute new fox barrel on vacay even if our airbnb stationary RV came with a fire pit and rock cairn for max pup training. You asked about the verbal cue for the 360 backside. Min’s is na-na-na, but I don’t use it much and I’m not sure it is too close to the lalala backside slice even if I try to draw out the na-na’s a bit more than the faster triplet sounding lalala. Kinda like the rhythm in American – lalala – lalala – na – na – na. I think Susan deliberately picked 2 similar sounding words for the backside cues, but I’m wondering if that is confusing for the dog since they jump the slice and the 360 differently.

    Heating Porridge – 9/1 and 9/5
Tried with food and some motion first- he offered a down. Tried food with a bit less motion – Still got a down. Switched to a toy and he offered sits! This was an earlier session than the video I already posted with the mini pinny. I was deliberately moving less in that one to see if that helped him offer a sit instead. (but he also had the disconnect looking for his treat in the grass so it wasn’t quite enough when I was outside)

    Inside – 9/1

    Outside – 9/5
So I brought the cute fox barrel up to Duluth but the morning grass is wet so I was delighted to find out our Airbnb RV already had a rocking horse setup. Really proud of the Dude who stayed focused on me with a toy while Min was telling the resident Japanese Chin to bug off.

    Strike Pose – Barrel – 9/1/20

OK -this one was awkward to get going but then it started going better. There was a short break between the different directions

    360 Backside – 9/1/20
Am I doing this right? I realized I’m stepping to the side to go past the barrel behind him.

    Backslide Slice – 9/1/20

Moved this outside and on to the barrel. (forgot about doing the wing1!) Was concentrating so hard on keeping my hand back and shoulder open that I forgot to actually look down at his beady black eyes. I think that was the reason for when he took the front side.

    Heating Porridge & Mini Pinny – 9/2/20
2 sessions today with the porridge thrown in at the beginning. Session at lunch I used food and toy for the evening session. He had trouble doing a spin but that is a harder trick. He offered a sit after each time. Last night I tried this inside with food and he could only offer a down (even when I asked for a sit). I have to edit those sessions down before I post them.

He got the bending well so I added the bumps and then the left/right cue. I started with the bumps not a bit closer together than 90deg angles and then I moved them a bit further apart later in the 2nd session. He seemed more comfortable bouncing through them when they were at the closer spacing.

YouTube clearly doesn’t like my tunnel videos! It actually uploaded quickly without stalling out like some other videos have but here it is again.

Tunnel Threadle with Cue – 8/26/20
Really happy with this one over lunch when it was 89deg out and muggy. No ducking in to the tunnel during setup and he played with the tug toy (with me running with the toy to the exit) even though he had to go past Nemo to get to the tunnel with me originally. I’m already using “come” as my non-tunnel threadle slice cue and didn’t like a single drawnout “heeeeerrre” for this so trying a slow repeated “here-here-here”. I think I turned my feet to the tunnel a bit early on the 2nd rep, but managed to keep them straight until he turned away to the tunnel on the 1rst and 3rd.

Rocking Horse Spin & Racetrack -8/24/20
In an earlier session (not shown), I told myself to make sure I could see his black beady eyes and had 2 whoopsie BCs which I did reward. Watched that video and realized I was good about looking at his eyes as he came around the barrel but then closed my shoulder while still looking at him and then took eyes off him before he passed me. So tried again (in this video) after a pep talk to open the shoulder AND look at his eyes – apparently I suck at this!
Or maybe I need to not get as far ahead so he can pass me sooner so I don’t feel like I”m going to run in to the barrel before I can look at it?

    Backside Slice – 8/25/20
2 sessions today (at lunch in my “work clothes”, aka the non-t-shirt top and earrings for video conferences, and later my agility t shirt I wore to Min’s class)
Faster moving to sherpa when ball was the reward even though he wasn’t sure about playing with it inside with Demi (Dean’s resident couch potato) walking by.
I think I could have added my ‘lalala’ verbal on this as he seems to be pretty cool with going around the back.

    Wing Wrap and 360 Backside – 8/25/20
Did a warmup with PNU and then some wing wrapping

Previously we tried this outside with a tug toy and decided it was still too hot and muggy even at 8pm at night (and yes -sadly we’re losing daylight noticeably). Not sure if the heat made it worse, but I have been having some difficulty using a tug toy as a reward because he’s not keen on giving it up and then tends to get mouthy after he does drop it.
