ParticipantHaha this made me laugh! “Adolescent Dog Team Chill” 🙂
Yes, I totally remember “the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat”. That’s an accurate description for sure. Especially when I sat on the ground out in the field to work on backing onto the teeter and all of sudden realized I was getting bit by red ants. Lol. Or when I drove 3 hours to go train with friends and it poured rain the entire time I was there. Last week was an odd one. 🤣
Adolescent dog brain accurately describes him. I never experienced it with Zane, but I know lots of people have talked about how slowly the boys mature and I think I’m getting a chance to experience it firsthand now. 😆
I got to thinking that maybe he was patterned to run around that end jumó now as well, so I set it up to try the other direction with the MM. I think we had better success, he was definitely thinking it was getting too hot already though. I am sending the whole session, just fast forwarded the setup between reps and deleted the portion where I moved the MM to the other side. It was interesting he blasted past the MM on the direction we did the other day, more than once. I had to go point out the treats in it.
One question, I was thinking I’d just leave this game alone for a bit now that we got him having some success doing two jumps in a line and come back to it later in the week or next week. But when we do, should we just concentrate on keeping him driving ahead for now, maybe seeing if I can get a little lateral distance from the jumps, or would you start mixing in the turns again? Thanks!

ParticipantThis is our attempt at the straight lines set up. I hate to even post the session but I’m obviously doing something wrong. We never got more than 3 obstacles. I tried reinforcing more randomly, especially rewarding after he would take the tunnel like we talked about before. I don’t know, I just really don’t know what to say. It seems like we are on a bit of a streak of poor sessions.
Marie Lister
ParticipantYep, that makes sense! I’m glad we increased the distance when we did. I think this is going to really help us once we get this concept.
Thank you for the video on placement of reinforcement, that was helpful. I do think I was targeting with that dog side arm, even though I wasn’t really aware of at the time. Lol. I can definitely work on it.
Me did mountain climber tonight with a little movement and I forgot the sandbags on the teeter. I will put them on before the next session. We have a little movement now and I think he seems pretty confident and happy.
Marie Lister
ParticipantI tried to fit in a quick session this morning with bigger distances like you suggested and it presented challenges for us. He seemed much more likely to pull off the jumps, (combination of me peeling away before he was committed on some of them and on others, maybe it’s just the increased distance?). Then on the reps where we got the jumps, I was either late or lost connection or was in the wrong place? Regardless, this session had way too many failures.
Should I pause the BC FC part of the exercise and just go back to some speed loops and see if I can increase his confidence driving to the jumps without me as close? Then once we have success with that, give it a try again adding the FC and BC? I’m also thinking we just let it rest for a bit and work on something else for a while. Not like we have a shortage of games. lol. Do you think I’m on the right track with that thought?
Also, when I do go back out, I’m going to take Zane out with me and try to get the arms for the blind under control more. I’m trying to have my arm close but back,(but that’s not what it looks like when I watch it on video. LOL) Do you think it would be better to just keep them in, without trying to have one back and just look over the shoulder for now? Cause I noticed they are still way wingy. lol
Marie Lister
ParticipantIt apparently may take us three weeks to work through the concept transfer game of wraps, front crosses and blind crosses. LOL. We did the blind crosses today and I did a couple wraps too. This is what I noticed. We did a couple reps and I came back in and watched the video and I was throwing my arm up like I was trying to send him out to the top of the pinwheel and then I was slow to get the BC in. So we went back out and this is what we got. I am trying to keep these arms under control.
We also set up the tight blind to wrap game we did during the live class Saturday. I know this sounds silly, but that was a big lightbulb moment for me that day when it finally sunk in that even when you were having me mark the spot halfway between the wing and tunnel, I kept thinking it was that when I crossed that line I was starting the BC. When it clicked that the start of the BC is when the dog is there, no matter where I was, I was like… “OH, now I get it!” Do you know how many years I’ve been focused on trying to get to a spot myself instead of starting the cue when the dog is at a certain spot? LOL It wasn’t like I’ve never heard what you were saying before, but for some reason it finally clicked. Now…putting it into practice, that’s the trick. Anyway, this is what we got today and you can see, I got confused on the very first rep. Overall, I did better turning to the left like we did on Saturday. Going to the right, I struggled. My timing was delayed. Like on the rep at 1:08, he was almost past me or maybe he was past me before I started the blind and I totally got in his way. But I still think he’s getting it.
Marie Lister
ParticipantOk, We tried the wraps again and I think I was more clear with my handling and he was great! I decided to stop while we were ahead today. I will work on the front crosses and blind crosses next though.
I know we are still behind and my moms surgery this week didn’t help. I think that may have been part of the issue yesterday as well. I was tired and I don’t think I was in a great place to be training the dogs. But we will work on trying to catch up. 😊Marie Lister
ParticipantWe did the love the slam game tonight. I think he’s doing well with it. We can try to backing up onto it next time.
Marie Lister
ParticipantYes, life is good with squeeze cheese. Lol. We will try to plan a trip up north and find some teeters to work on away from home. Might be a bit before I get up there though.
Ok, we tried wraps and things went south. We got the wrong end of the tunnel a couple of times, (when I watched it back, it looks like I’m turning and sending him right into the wrong end 😕 and I was really trying not to). Then we kept having issues with the jump coming out of the tunnel when we were going counterclockwise. I’m not sure what I was doing wrong there. Anyway, we didn’t get far with this exercise.
Also, I’m noticing as I start adding any speed with any of the exercises, he’s getting more vocal and if he has enough room, he races ahead of me and cuts in front of me and barks and jumps. Do you think my motion is just more exciting to him than any value that the obstacles have at this point? He does the same thing to Zane in the yard. He runs faster than Zane and cuts him off. Zane hates it, and I can’t say I am a fan either. I’m not quite to the point of cussing him out like Zane does though. Lol
Marie Lister
ParticipantWe tried Mountain climber again and added in a wing. I think he’s still looking nice and confident.
I also tried some of the lazy game step 3 I thought, but I think I may have confused it a bit with timing and connection game. Anyway, I can definitely redo that but I’ll still show you what we’ve got so far because maybe there are things we need to adjust anyway.
Marie Lister
ParticipantOk, so thinking about what you said about pulling away on the tunnel send, I thought with these sequences I might not try to lead out as far, in hopes I will stay more straight when I’m sending to the tunnel. I don’t think I got as many head checks. I do think that I was pulling away again on the 4th sequence on our 2nd attempt and he came into me, instead of going to the tunnel.
I actually stopped and came back and watched each run after I ran again this time, but even when I think I have things in mind to try to do different, I seem to run similarly each time. Please tell ke that that improves the more we do this. Lol. I really want to get better.
Marie Lister
ParticipantYes, Zane did get to work with you in SLC! We set up the ESC sequence tonight, but we only did the first two sequences. I did each three times, but in watching them back, I didn’t see as much difference as I hoped I was making. Lol. Especially in the first sequence. The second sequence I could see some little differences. I tried to layer the middle jump on the first rep and it caused some question for him. I didn’t layer on the next rep and that was clearer for him. The third rep I thought I was getting the verbal cue for the turn out sooner and leaving to start running down the line faster, but I don’t think the verbal was actually earlier. Anyway, I thought I should stop there for tonight.
Marie Lister
ParticipantIt’s so nice to be back to the games. Dice is so happy. Lol. We got in three games this morning. On the lazy game we went ahead and moved the jumps out a bit and I tried the one step with the arm. I have to apologize in advance, the other dogs were in the house and they gave a consistent and very loud commentary the whole time we were in the front yard. I’m sorry. I think he did well though with this step, so if you think we are good to proceed, I’ll add the tunnel and do lazy game with tunnel.
We did the plank confidence, I was talking to Lee and we were brainstorming some ideas for not having to toss the treat on the sand. Would it work if I toss to a towel or something?
Lastly, we did the Mountain Climber. This was Dice’s favorite! We tried it once last night for the first time and apparently, squeeze cheese is the best thing ever. LOL He was going to beat me to the game today.
Marie Lister
ParticipantWe are starting off like a herd of turtles here this time around! But we are getting started finally, so that’s good. We tried the lazy game last night. I think he did pretty well. I was thinking of moving the middle jump out a little and trying the next
step.
Marie Lister
ParticipantOk cool! I hope I filled it out correctly. Cause I’m interested in all the live seminars, but I can’t do Wednesdays, so I didn’t select that button, I just clicked the weekdays button, since I’m available the other weeknights.
Marie Lister
ParticipantWe got a chance to try the zigzag again with the distsnce closer. I wasn’t quick enough with the cues a couple times, but eventually I think we got it.
We also tried the smiley face tunnel threadle again with a little more speed. So, instead of him not getting the non obvious end of the tunnel, he went there when I didn’t intend to send him. So maybe I disconnected? It wasn’t every time. I switched sides when we had trouble with it twice and then went back and it seemed better.
Looking forward to class tomorrow!
