This is the exercise that just keeps on giving the laughter. I mentally ran through our training and I FORGOT to teach her a release word. We played the two toy game, and I was shaking the other toy for a release. We skipped a few steps!

Here is another session on the prop send. I noticed that our personal play is very lacking. But she did much better with the sends. Or I should say we did much better with the sends.

Today, I began a new journey that I have been putting off since I got my toy-driven dogs: teaching toy control. This isn’t my area of expertise, and I usually shy away from it. However, I decided to dive into the wing wrap field guide. Compared to her grand dam and Aunt, Roulette has impressive toy control, so she’s a good starter dog.

We used two toys, and I was on the ground with her. I forgot my marker word. I am changing it to “tug.” She seemed to respond well, so we introduced an upright. It turned out to be a lot of fun, and we shared plenty of laughs. I tried to use my marker word correctly, but we definitely need to work on that more.

It’s been a rough week—one of my dogs got skunked, and my husband’s truck and trailer were stolen. Those giggles during our training really made my day. I think she may have nose-poked my lens as it’s a bit blurry.

Rou did great with the novel object but it wasn’t visible in the video. It was a T-shirt and too far away.

Today we did some shaping games. We’ve played this game a lot and I could not think of much we haven’t gotten on. She has always loved getting on things I accidentally left a kitchen chair and she gets right on the table, or she’ll jump onto a crate to get on the kitchen island.

    Hi Tracy,

For the wrap exercise, when we move to standing, can we toss a cookie, or should we still use the dish?

Here is the stealth recall game. I used food and a tug toy for this since she’s just coming into me, and I don’t have to bend down to get the toy. I added a novel distraction but you couldn’t see it in the video, so I deleted that part. I’ll pick a better object for the next one.

Thank you. I definitely need to start ramping her up a bit. I’ve been playing it safe after getting a few good bites with sharp puppy teeth.

She is much better at bringing the ball back to me. We will use that for now when we can. We practiced a bit more last night.

Here is her wing wrap. She’s never done this with an upright. We’ve used a small cone, big cone and jump wing. Halfway through I couldn’t remember if I was supposed to mark her food dish. This is the 3rd class we’ve done it and each was slightly different.

To be honest I wasn’t sure how well she’d get near me with it. We’ve mostly worked with balls with my back lately. Tug is a little higher value. I’ll give it a go in the backyard. The tug is a bungee type but it’s a short bungee. I’ll see if I can find my longer one.

Here is some work as follows
    1. Decel to handler
    2. Decel with turn
    3. Sends to target. Ok this is where we need help. Send to the paw target. As soon as I add a hand, she checks my hand – provably checking for a cookie? But she also nose pokes EVERYTHING when she’s curious. I played around with different hand movements.

I’ve had treats in my hands a lot due to my carpal tunnel but I’m working on getting them in my pockets.

    Hi Tracy,

We are so happy to be back. I hurt my back about month ago picking up one of the dogs. Our play skills are rough because is that and you can see I’m still not very flexible. Roulette was very happy to see a tug again.

We’ve both always had a side. My side is “weird” – from direct right to in front of me the right side is easy, but doing say a blind the left side is easy. Two herniated discs make things a tad difficult.

Today we practiced the zig zag games after introducing the tunnel and it was hotter than I anticipated. We’re also working on leaving me to get the toy and not running away with the toy.
Video is the zig zag game. I’m a bit of a dog geek and always find it fascinating to see how each puppy learns ever so slightly different than others.

We’re back. Trying to balance show weekends and 5 dogs and it’s hectic.

Loved all your tips. They are working well. Abs does love to “hop” with anything.

We worked on Smiley face games and I can’t
Remember the other exercise. I did it backwards so I’m just submitting smiley face games.

I can only remember one verbal it seems.
Left turns are much smoother and she jumps less. Interesting!

It feels so good to train again. Plus it saves my sanity. We don’t have much space with the teeter but I am hopeful we can officially put it away until Rebel needs it further down the line.

She definitely has one side that is much much better than the other. I also keep forgetting to pull my hair back. That will help with connection. We will work on toys. We shall see if she can think and or bring one back if I have 2. We are a work in progress. Today we did the pill bug and she was able to leave for food when I had her high value toy. WOOT WOOT. The oval was too “sharp” for her size I think. I also found the training for Minny Penny from a previous class and we worked on that. I need to remember she’s already 24″ and give her space to get around and also not block the wing with my body. But we had a lot of fun. You can see she is very “pawsy” but I think with time it will fade out. That little hop also makes me giggle and well laughter is always good for the soul.

We are finally back. Training trip – when you are holding a door open, don’t turn your back on a puppy that likes to body slam doors. My lower back is slowly recovering.

Today we worked on jump set point. I then realized I haven’t “named” the manners minder. The real cue is Dish. I said a million different cues.

Then we worked on wind in your hair. I am batting 1000 because as I watched the video I completely told her the wrong verbals each time. We had fun. I tried to focus and not giggle. You can see she likes to paw thwack. That little hop thing. I know with time, she will start jumping fine. But right now she’s trying to knock my hands. Once the treat went flying, it became a game. She didn’t send as well to the manners minder as she did with cheese. I’ll have to play with using toys vs food in my hand vs manners minder.

    Hi Tracy,

Sorry I should have elaborated. We have positively trained ever collar training you can imagine. She tolerates it, or runs the other way. I am ok using it when need be. Fortunately, her body language is very clear when she’s going to bolt if I reach for her. With the rep where I used the toy to get her, she’d have bolted if I’d have reached for her. She also loves to play “you can’t catch me, chase me” so we are working on a whole package of things related to this. It’s a good thing puppies are cute.

We have started stay on a Cato board, but it will end up a battle at this point. If she will send to the manners minder and go ahead of me, can we go that route or should we skip this exercise. I don’t mind skipping it. I know from your previous courses, there will be many opportunities for us to practice other drills if need be. It is just the first week and here am I being a difficult student already 🙁 I’m sorry.

We’ve been working on our stays and I’m so happy I taped them today. Sadly I’m disconnecting right away 🙁 she’s very very breedable and I couldn’t figure out what she needed. After the run she finally pooped in the potty area. She was pretty pokey at first but perked up a bit. I’ve noticed she doesn’t have as much jump commitment as I’d like. Good thing it’s easy to work on 🙂

Her stays were great except the time I babbled at her.

I’m still learning to balance. I used to be an “over helper” so I’m trying to find the right balance.

We are working on the “lead outs” but at this point it’s just a stay near the first jump. We’re getting there though.

I used my rental to work on some lap turns and tandem. Also working on continuing building reward for toys vs food

Oh that makes sense!! Hopefully my yard dries up soon. Right now I’m limited to the tunnel set up where I rent. Today we worked on Teeter Foundations: Angled Entries. Wow she LOVED this game. I started straight, then did just the channels (Amazon boxes 😆). Then added some angle on each side. When I rewatched it I see she’s jumping a tad at the end. Is that an issue?
