Since this is hard stuff, I’ve been working sections of the Std 1 course this week and today I tried to put it together. The weave section is the hardest. When it was broken down he’s been successful (when he was fresh and had only worked the tunnel through weaves section). But, today we made an attempt and moved on. It would probably be easier to handle the jump/weaves from the other side but I don’t think I can get there. I also don’t trust him to do the backside after the dw (he runs around the jump if I’m moving) so that complicates things too.

Ok! Took me a few tries to figure out how this sorcery works. I’ve seen people do it, but I didn’t realize I needed the ‘Slow your roll’ break. I wish I had left the recording on because after I was successful, I ran it again but didn’t take a long of a lead out (wanted to see if would work when I was behind but still in peripheral view). It worked! He does seem a little pokey/tired so i’ll practice this move a bit once it cools off. Thx!

So, make sure I understand, on seq 4 for the 180 I should decel, turn shoulders to the left and bring my left arm across my body to tighten up the 180? I feel like tunrning my shoulders to the left and then bringing my left arm up he might not see it, but I’ll try (I’ll have to bring it up and over my right shoulder though?). Am I understanding correctly?

    Hi Tracy,

Here are 2 different training sessions.

First one is Serp Combo game. I think I’m late on my exit line verbal but I also am not sure if I can really say in much earlier and still get the serp vs go on?

2nd part of the video is front back game. We are both stronger on the left. I think I trained left before right and I seem to default to being more comfortable having him go left. So, I spend more time doing the right side stuff and less on the left in case you are wondering why going right seems harder. I think it’s me lol.

Hi Tracy. I’ve been practicing week 3 and week 4 exercises but I’m a little behind on videoing. Here’s my session from tonight. Backside slice with balance reps and backside circle with wing. It was about an 8 minute session but probably 3 minutes too long. He sort of had a deer in the headlights look on the last few reps so that could be part of the reason why the backside circle on the right was harder for him. It’s so hard to remember to stop while ahead (and I wanted to get some video)…I think I’ll set a 5 minute timer next time. Anyway, I think he’s doing well. He does think the answer to a hand in the collar is backside (he did that the first rep when I wanted a left or a right). And interestingly when I first setup the serp excercise he thought the only thing it could be was a threadle so I definitely need to balance my training.

Serps, I think those are going well. Backsides…he’s used to more physical cues on these so it’s going to take a lot more short sessions/reps for him to understand the words. I’ll try this weekend when I have a little more space which may help as well. I did a few balance reps (go, left and right although not on video) and he was really guessing. So, should I wait for balance reps until he really seems to understand the back cue? I can work the go/left/right in a different training sessions. He seems to understand it in that context. Thx!

He’s pretty solid with toys and speed on the wing + Jump. The 2 jumps is pretty hard in my smaller space. But today I practiced in a little bit large place with toys and not a ton of motion but I think he’s doing well. My throwing technique needs improvement though lol. Also, thank you for calling me out on my marker cues. I turn on the video and forget I have them apparently. I have a ‘get it’ which means i’m going to throw a reward so I used that. He’s curling back quite a bit though. Guessing I’m late in marking followed by a throw? He is pretty quick though so I’m afraid of marking too early then having him change his mind. Thx!

    Hi,

Here is week 2 wing + Jump and 2 jumps. I’m getting a feel for how much (or little) speed he can handle at this point. So, right now I’m still having to move fairly slowly and use food as too much speed and toys are a little too much. I will try what you previously suggested for the toy (playing first then switching to food) but for this session, I used just food. This was also the 2nd session today as I forgot to hit record the first time I tried smh.

This weekend I’ll have a place to train with a little more space and turf so I won’t have as many struggles with cheese rolling around lol.

Also, I’m pretty happy with how he did. Understanding isn’t 100% but we’ll get there. this is the first dog I legit trained a left/right on. All others only had turn (switch).

    Video

    Part 1 – Take 2
I realized had been practicing with my jumps in the exact same spot each session so I decided to move them. That was hard for him, but we worked through it. I played around with leaving early and also keeping my feet forward, so it wasn’t just my motion getting the wrap. I think he’s getting this!

    Part 2
Started the 2 jumps exercise this am. He cannot do it with a toy or much motion yet. Wants the second jump lol. To his defense, I’m sure I haven’t balanced my training and encouraged more “go on” since I’m so slow. So, food worked well. When I am doing the exercise, I feel like he’s jumping long then turning. But when I watch the video, he seems to be handling it better than it feels? Or I don’t know what I’m looking for and that is entirely possible.

I really like both these exercises. It makes us both think (me words, him correct wrap).

Week 1 Wrap Verbals Step 1

Ok, here is part 1. I decided to use dig dig dig for a wrap to the left and check check check for a wrap to the right. I was struggling a bit with my small space on how far/fast I could move so for sure need more practice. But, wanted to get this out there for review before I do too many reps incorrectly lol. This is two different sessions with a short play break in between (Falco tires easy because he only contains 30% border collie genetics 🙂 )

One rep he thought rear cross () because my feet were facing the wrong way (not towards the jump). I assume he was correct? I mean he’s facing the jump and I tell him chech chech check (which he might not totally know yet because I added the verbal tonight) but, even if my feet/body aren’t right, should I expect him to go to the jump and wrap it since he’s sort of looking at it anyway? Actually, just wondering how perfect I need to be.

All of your suggestions are totally right. I’m just struggling with trying to remember all the words and the amount of time/reps to teach the words. Previous dogs have only had a ‘turn’ (away from me), out (move away from me) and I understand I have to be seen for these to work (and not have a dog that looks around for me). And the slower I get and the harder courses get, this isn’t going to work. I’ll put some more thought into these but for the wraps, I’ll start having 2 different words. Makes sense and needs to be done. Thx!
