ParticipantGood Morning Tracy! Thank you for your ideas on Recall!
When you do eventually go back into the house β more rewards! It can be her entire breakfast or dinner (if she likes meals, I am guessing she does) or a stuffed Toppl or something really fun.
I have to remember to do this!Follow thru all the way with cookies!
If you throw food to get her back then grab her and the game is overβ¦ she will stop coming back π
Guilty!! It’s more like I throw food to get her close enough to me to put the long line back on to go back inside π I chnaged this last night to a chase game instead & didn’t go in right after the long line went back on.
You can also ask the other dogs to help! Each dog is given a toy and told they can go for a run. Call your older/reliable dogs back, give a HUGE reward, then give them the toy again. Donβt call Sunnie at first, she can watch or do whatever.
Sunnie will learn by social learning β then when she chooses to come back to you, big party! Then send her on her way again while you keep doing recalls with other dogs. Then you can add her to the game: call each dog, reward, call her β reward. Then back to freedom. We played around with this last night! Lexie, my 13 y/o will retrieve all day long, so she’s reliable to go get the thing & come back for more, Kelsie the 9 y/o will join in too! Everyone has a hollee roller, but Sunnie like the LArge one best so does Lexie so I have to get another one LOL
Would you consider the hollee roller to be one of her highest value toys? If so, you can have a 2nd holler roller or a higher value toy to throw the other direction. It is a back-and-forth game, where you can throw the 2nd reward when she looks at you or moves towards you. Do that a few times to get her moving instead of hanging out in the grass: call, start to move the other direction, then whip out the toy.
I experimented last night with this too -As much as SHE thinks the holle roller is a prize, when I tried to play with her with another one, not so exciting, but if I run around and drag the crazy tug toy (that has fuzzy & hollee roller on it), that got her going after me!
Lots of great ideas that I will play around with π Oh btw I called her off a flying bird last night!! π I had no long line on, having a slight heart attack as she took off running. I gave her the Biggest jackpot ever when she came running to ME! π
We also played around with Strike A Pose Part 3: Concept Transfer For Threadles (Slices) right side only. We spent enough time on that side I didn’t want to keep going. The video is almost 3 min but I wanted to keep in the beginning when I was trouble shooting. Once she figure it out I was like holy sh#$% as she flew to the cookies! π I forgot to bring a bowl down to the yard so I improvised and used the case for my lens that I put on my tablet to widen the view LOL! Sunnie did fine with it LOL It was windy so we had some moments of distraction, I was very impressed & proud how she held it together! π
Tonight we are sharing a lesson with a friend, 1st time trying this. We will be in a dirt arena (new to Sunnie). I would like to try to piece 2 things together & see how she does & modify if we have to. Wing wrap> straight jump to bowl, straight jump to wing wrap, rocking horse game with 2 wings. Thoughts?

ParticipantGood Monring! Thank you Tracy π
We had a fun game of recall yesterday, however when she had the hollee roller in her mouth, no beuno π layed in the grass like she didn’t know me. Any suggestions on how to train a recall wehen she’s got ‘the prize’? Do I need to carry a toy in my pocket too and entice her with that before I say Sunnie come? Or maybe get some raw as a reward too? π

ParticipantGood Morning! Thank you Tracy π
And if I always play when I get home, the arousal levels will get really high when I get home and maybe too high (and I donβt always want to play :)) Mixing things up is exciting in a good way and avoids the dogs expecting things to happen at certain times.
YES! trying hard to mix this up, now that we have longer daylight this helps because before it was hurry up and get the thing done before dark π Some days (now) afterwork I don’t even train or the training comes a bit after we all go potty, I just delay it a bit. The big dogs do get amped up the longer I wait & especially if I am ‘preparing’ the bag the go outside to train- which doesn’t help Sunnie because she feeding off of them! But one thing I have done is that she has to wait at the gate on the deck before I release her to the yard. Kelsie goes flying off the deck (ya I know bad momma, but I didn’t know that she needed impulse control too even if she wasn’t as ‘excitable’ as my older dog, anyway that’s another story!) sooo Sunnie had to wait until Kelsie & Lexie (my 13 y/o who is the older version of Sunnie lol) are in the yard. I am impressed with this kid because this is hard for her, but she waits until I say Ok. I think all the IYC games have helped her in this situation too. Of course I have to remind her to wait, but that’s ok I can let go of her harness, have zero tension, for a few seconds before I let her run into the yard.
She seemed to really love that toy and was very into it at the beginning! She won the toy race but also turned to you to engage with the toy (and didnβt take it on a victory lap): that is awesome!
So yesterday after a little training session I got the crazy tug toy out & ran around with it, that got her juices going and she was nuts. Then I experimented (as you suggested up there days ago :D) to try throwing too- let’s see what she likes better – throw or chase! I lost her to party of one when I threw the crazy tug toy! She took it and ran away, circling me – probably how she plays keep away with Kelsie! wants to play with us but also wants the prize! She is like this too if she gets a ball or a hollee roller, runs like she has a prize! This makes me nervous because I don’t trust her recall & sometimes I don’t have a long line on her, especially after training. The only way I have a chance of getting her back is if I get close enough to her to do a scatter. She will drop the toy and I can get a long line back on her. The life skills dept is lacking, I blame it on winter, not thinking I had the space to do it π I know I need to work on this ASAP but have to find the resources to help me. So long winded comment about if she likes chase or throw for toy toy! She likes both, but chase keeps me engagaed with her π
Totally agree! One thing my young dogs have taught me is that heat is a pretty big distraction! Their brains are like WHAT IS THIS so they have to devote a lot of brain energy to regulate body systems that they donβt ordinarily have to regulate when they are in our lovely climate controlled homes LOL! So you might see certain struggles outside in the heat because her brain is dealing with a whole new set of things to process. But it wonβt take her long to adjust, especially because her breed & lines are bred to handle different climates and work hard outdoors.
Interesting!! Thank you for that tid bit!! π
This morning we played around with Beginning Remote Reinforcement! This was fun and we both had our wheels turning LOL! I had to adjust here and there to make sure she was successful π Middle came back in the picture accidentally lol! Good Girl Sunnie – you’ll see what she did! I hope this transfers over to a wonderful start line stay LOL!!! Should we try this again, at what level? I don’t want to rush it, I’m not sure what increment we should add π Thanks!!

ParticipantGood Morning! Thank you Tracy for the Play suggestions π I want to keep working on that along with our exercises π When I first get home, everyone is “excited” so maybe that’s the time to start a training session with play (no food on me)? Or should I mix it up start with exercise & then try toy play with no food on me?
We tried them last night. We have been getting unseasonable weather – high 80’s – that’s summer temps not April temps! All the dogs asre feeling it and human too π
No food in my pocket > toy races to start, then I grabbed some string cheese and did a few reps at the barrels. Something easy, she can run & she knows it. In my head I was going to try to go back to toy play, but forgot & did a few reps of threadle wrap with movement. She was hot so we stopped after that & ran up to the house for a drink!
I think Sunnie did great despite the weather, we had no wind so no flying leaves to contend with! π

Participant*”PLAY session suggestions” not pay lol!

ParticipantGood Morning! Thank you Tracy! π
She did great at the beginning of the 2nd video then didnβt have a lot of impulse control left at about :40 β she could no longer ignore the cookie in the bowl on the ground LOL! That was probably just a bit of βbrain tiredβ depletion. Self-control can be like a bank account in young dogs: it gets overdrawn pretty quickly. But she ended strong!
Got it! I’ll try to pay more attention to ” brain tired” Yes, you’re right, outside does take alot of concentration! π
Here is our Go at the resilience game in her VERY (lol) familiar space π Not fazed at all, lol! I walked to the other side of the room because that’s the ‘fun’ area where the toys are. Once she realized I wasn’t doing anything fun she tapped out, hopped on the couch & left the area LOL!
Pay session suggestions above- YES!! Sounds like a plan for the great outdoors π Impromptu wild play session happened this morning after we were done doing some fitness π My plan was to have a little play session, but I think I jacked her up (in a good way) because she executed something amazing we’ve been working on. She turend on the after burners when I brought out the toy toy! Did a little chase, toy races & practiced our Strike (grab the toy) since she was going after my face π It’s a bit long, maybe I should have stopped @ 2 min?? But we were having fun & I got wrapped up in the Game LOL! I did feel her energy/interest change a bit toward the end of my video so I stopped before she completely tapped out. Sunnie is 5.5 months old now, just a point of reference. π

ParticipantGood Morning! Thank you Tracy! π
Yes, cookies in the bowl would be a good next step β it works best when you put the cookies in the bowl before you set her up in the stay, so her attention is more on you and less on the bowlLast night we tried strike a pose with wings. I left the bowl in place all the time and put cookies in it before I set her up as you suggested, much better! It was a bit windy so we had flying leaves to contend with but she did ok π
I edited out the transport back, it just added too much time to the video, beleive it or not! I did leave in where we had an oops when she was coming in to my right hand. I gave her 2 tries and then picked up the bowl. This was FUN, I don’t think adding the wings changed the picture too much for her π
Did you throw it or run around dragging it? We can keep track of what gets her excited for the toy after all the cookies π
I would love to work on this with you! π Here is last night after the training session. What I would like to do is play in between reps (in between left & right side for example) & get the toy in the actual training session too! I think I can, just have to be strategic about it switching from food & toy – outdoors! I’m going to try another chase/tug toy that she really likes that we’ve been using indoor in the basement π Maybe I should just load up the bag with the toy toys & try different ones and see which ones spark her at that moment! π

ParticipantThank you Tracy π
No wind tonight so I set up my tablet. I wanted to try the threadle wrap with room to walk away so I set the tablet a bit too far away – sorry about that! I used string cheese which Sunnie found pretty quick so I didn’t get to walk away as far as I anticipated π I walked away after I tossed the cheese & stopped when she turned & headed toward me. Mechanics were wonky again lol! I did break off (not on the video) between switching sides, however Sunnie wasn’t feeling the love for chasing her toy toy.
Then we went back to strike a pose with your suggestions – I used a bowl & left it on the ground. I primed the bowl before we started π We work on IYC with the “DISH” in different scenarios so… π I am super proud of this kid, so many little pieces that we’ve training all along are put together in this exercise! stay, impulse control, hand touch that morphed into a cue! Should I try this with cookies in the bowl now? Or just let it be for now?
We did get a good game of chase with the toy toy after strike a pose!! π

ParticipantGood Morning! Thank you Tracy! π
Threadle fun this morning with a lotus ball. Since I use her kibble I thought I would try the LB to keep the kibble pieces in one spot lol!
I kept in one of the play sessions in the video because I’m always happy to get help with toy play when she isn’t so keen on it after a food session π I chose the lotus ball tug to get her interest in some food play lol & so we weren’t doing too many reps of the threadle without some play. Any suggestions on my toy play? π
My mechanics got a little wonky when she was on my left, so I ended up just standing still for the U turn. I ended before I got crazy & wanting a perfect turn! π
I probably could have ditched to LB and tried using 2 hands as you suggested above, but I forgot – smh lol! I didn’t want to do too many reps either. It’s so fun & easy to keep going!

ParticipantThank you Tracy! π Hope you had a wonderful Easter! π I will try these 2 suggestions above for Rocking Horse & Strike a Pose -sounds fun- for outside fun! Today is super windy (worried my tablet will fall down again!) & my family goes back home, so we’ll see how the day goes! π
This morning we played with threadle wrap foundations – small space exercise for the win! π You’re right, it looks easier than it is! I am really excited to learn this handling option from the ground up. When me & my adult dog were taught this it wasn’t broken down like this & maybe it’s different with an older dog?! Dunno. In any case, Sunnie is learning from the ground up and I know this kid (& me!) will become proficient at it, eventually! Did I mention how much I LOVE this course?! π Anyway, sorry about the little backstory lol!
Here is our ‘intro’ with 360 circles. her left circles seemed ‘easier’ which is her harder turn. Right side we got a couple Middles. I got this too when I added the cookie toss, you will see in the next video. What can I do to make that picture clearer for her? Maybe I should start saying Side? Also, what should I do when she does go into Middle- reward or reset her some how without it becoming a reward? In my mind if I cued it – unintentionally- shouldn’t I reward her? Feels like what came first the chicken or the egg? LOL!
Next we tried the U shape turn & toss with me stationary π Some mechanics to wotk out and how to handle when Middle happens π

ParticipantThank you Tracy! π
She seemed to be really targeting the prop on the get out and not waiting on the cookie throw. Super!!
Yes! not like previous sessions! I think switching the cookie arm was the ticket!
She is shifting her leads away to get to the prop and thatβs exactly what we want.
COOL! Thank you for pointing that out π Yes! I will take this outside. I think it will be fun to see her really Get Out, in increments of course π
Tonight we went back to the Rocking Horse. I lost her at to the birds, you’ll see @ :13 us walking back from the distraction. To get her back focused on me I said Get It and did a couple throws of the back & forth game, but I really need something better than kibbel for those times! She needs to see it & make it worth her while, no? I moved the barrel out a little bit after a couple reps at the start of the session and used our verbal wrap cues π
Next up was Strike a Pose with a lotus ball. She had a hard time when I placed it on the ground. After some failures I ended up just throwing it. In her defence I haven’t used a lotus ball as a dead toy, honestly only introduced it a while back as to what it was! I realized this after the session was over what had happened. Next time we can try a bowl, but that one position when they are right next to it is a hard one- good goal to work towards tho’!

ParticipantOh good! I was hoping you would stay with us awhile longer!! π
Quick morning session before the company was awake. I was a bit more “quiet” since I had my other 2 dogs are in crates right in the vicinity and the 13 y/o has serious FOMO π This area is much smaller than downstairs, but I tried to adapt! The Get Out isn’t huge but hope it made sense to her.
This felt much better! I started Sunnie on a mat since that part of the flooring is tile, she was scurring a bit when she took off for the first couple tries. I edited that part out since you couldn’t see her anyway lol! My marker words got a bit jumbled – “Good” is I deliver food to you! But then quickly changed my words π Fun session even if it was a bit squishy π
Margaret Daunt
ParticipantThank you Tracy! I will try your suggestion having cookies in the dog side arm.
Will you be offering Max Pup 2 again when this course ends? π
Margaret Daunt
ParticipantGood Morning!
This was yesterday’s session. Too much craziness going on yesterday with family arriving to sit down LOL π
You can let her hit the prop then throw the treat after she hits it.
I tried doing this. And tried staying ahead of her too, but sometimes I was ‘waiting’ for her since she was looking for the kibbles I threw. I did use CB for the “prop reward” Then I tried the other side which was harder I think for me LOL Some mechanics to work out, thankful I have you for that! π π
Margaret Daunt
ParticipantThank you Tracy! π
Another thing to consider as she enters adolescence is that if you have a particularly intense period of training or activity in general, giving her a day or two off of anything formal or structured is great for resilience. Wandering and sniffing, romping in the yard⦠all of that is a great way for her nervous system to regulate and reset
Thank you for not only giving me feedback on my videos, but also giving me a heads up on what’s coming up – age wise – and what to do in this stage of life. This is not the first time you educated me on Sunnie’s behavior- so Thank You!! π We have company coming soon from Germany, my niece, her husband and 7 y/o daughter. Our week will be a little out of the norm, so I will be going light on the training π
Get Out looks easier in your video than it felt this morning LOL! The video is a little long, but I included the beginning reps of no movement & then moved on to movement. I started out with kibble but then swtiched the charlie bears. The handfull of kibble I was tossing became a scavenger hunt lol!
I feel like I was mushing every thing together. Moving, tossing and saying Get out all at once smh! Sunnie had a little difficulty switching from Get Out to just staying at my side. It just felt all messy to me! Sunnie liked ‘getting out’ the girl loves movement and if the cookies are flying even better πTomorrow is our last nice day before a week of rain so I think we’ll up the ante as you suggested & put a bowl on the ground for strike a pose & get in a few reps of parallel path- those 2 exercises need Room! π
