Aha! Watching both of these, I see why she goes to the most direct route to the dish πŸ™‚ The stillness game is all about focus on the dish – and when the dish gets to the other side of the cone, the context is almost entirely the same (including being held similarly) that she thinks it is the go-to-dish game.

Ok! I see what you mean now. It IS the same picture as the stillness game πŸ™ She’s so smart she was doing what she knows, the hooman was on the wrong page πŸ˜€ Honest opinion, should I not continue with that game since we will be using bowls with you? Or is it too late, she “knows” that exercise/picture already. I don’t want to confuse her either.

We went back to the barrel with moving the bowls behind me. She caught me a few (ok maybe many LOL) times moving the bowls which interrupted her flow. Otherwise it was FUN to see her run!! πŸ˜€

Questions regarding the Resilience Game 2 lecture πŸ™‚ I need help with some markers please. So far I have: Get It- thrown food or toy, TRADE- drop whatever is in your mouth (good or bad) for a cookie GOOD- I hand deliver cookie YES- come to me for cookie. I would like to add STRIKE-toy reward in my hand to grab & tug with me. Do I just repeat the word when she does this action & that’s how she’ll learn what it means? CATCH – how do I teach this? πŸ˜€ I throw cookies at Sunnie and she looks at the ground waiting for them to drop LOL! Do I need a marker word for a dead toy or dead lotus ball? I never had more then 3 marker words with my previous dog. I only taught her what they meant during the past 2 years. I would just say all the words all the time SMH. I didn’t know πŸ™ So I want to do better for Sunnie πŸ™‚

    Thanks Tracy πŸ™‚

Here is a short clip of the exercise I am referring to above. Basically teaching the dog that stillness = the release cue to the reward. Teaching an informal stay. This is just step 1 (this is not my creativity, it’s from another class) I don’t want to muddy the waters. I hope that it’s 2 different contextes & I can continue with both somehow πŸ™‚

We gave SSC a whirl this morning with being closer – she still cut in! I should have stopped at the last one she was successful, but I did one more – bad momma πŸ™ I’m stumped. I have been doing an exercise where she drives right to the bowl after a 3 sec delay, I”m holding her collar. Is this screwing her up for this exercise? She needs to learn eventually to not go to a “dead toy” or by pass the toy or bowl right? So I don’t *think* that 2 exercise I’m doing should be confusing? It’s in 2 different contextes right? Thanks Tracy!

Hi Tracy! Thank you for the feedback! πŸ™‚ Has anyone told you that you are brilliant?! πŸ˜€ not only do you share the how to but the why, the emotion & everything else. I hope I get to train with you in real life someday! πŸ™‚

Thank you for your thoughts on Sunnie’s toy play & food play. Great food for thought and things I never thought of that I may need to alter for better success all around πŸ™‚

I didn’t get video, but I dragged out the wobble board on a laminate floor so it would make noise. We did some circles so it would really bang LOL no issues at all! Check that off the list πŸ˜€

β€œGoing well until it didn’t” basically sums up puppy training LOL! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜ LOL! this was really funny & made me feel OK that things went sideways and will continue to go that way from time to time πŸ˜€

I looked back at Wed session of SSC, she deliberatley went under my arm twice to get to the dish. I was even close to cone. You’re right, it’s the timing, she was going straight and then veered under my arm to go to the dish on my verabl. I’ll try this again and not say dish so soon & see what happens. So good girl on Sunnie for listening to da momma LOL!

Our Magical Toy Races the day after I was asking if my puppy was broken πŸ˜€ This was after breakfast. I wanted to experiment to see if we started with toys before bringing out any food, how that would go. Here is how it went. I spent more time playing with the toys than the race itself, I didn’t want to lose the toy play momentum & it’s just fun, I love playing with her!

Since Sunnie was still hopped up on toys I wanted to try the wing wrap game, but I really didn’t know how to incoporate the toys, she lost interest, so I didn’t push it πŸ™‚

Hi Tracy! Thank you for the feedback πŸ™‚

Tried adding a little motion to the plank. No problem at all & I think she liked it LOL! I wasn’t fair to her with my luring when she fell off – oops πŸ˜€

SSC folding was going so well until it didn’t. I didn’t realize until I read your lecture on clean mechanics & markers that I was using the wrong marker word! I was saying Get It which is thrown food or toy. I said Get It because you did in the demo video LOL!! Food in a Dish is DISH, she actually didn’t know DISH until we trained it this week. We tried SCC folding a few times this week without success as the bowl moved further, she was cutting in, but I didn’t get a chance to post it here. Tonight we tried again, but this time I moved the bowl in smaller increments. She’s cutting in, I didn’t know if I should reward so I did & then aborted when I didn’t know how to proceed! We were at 2 min anyway, so it was good that I stopped! πŸ˜€

We ended with Prop Game 1 to practice Yes (come to me for reward) πŸ™‚

I think I broke my puppy LOL! Her toy play has kinda left the room. I don’t know if it’s the time of day (befere or after breakfast/dinner), if I’m using her kibble first for training then (trying to) use a toy, me – my mechanics or what really. Silly question, she is playing alot more with my older dog lately, is that jepordizing her play with me? Thank you πŸ™‚

Hi Tracy! Thank you for the feedback! πŸ™‚

That is a great resilience moment where there is a little pulse of stress that her body was able to regulate and dismiss (under the hood, her body was working to balance the release of stress hormones back to baseline).

Love this! I am learning so much from you! Breaking down the behavior like this! πŸ™‚

Yesterday morning we did some stuff, with puppy class at night I didn’t get a chance to post πŸ˜€ My “cooperative” little puppy went feral at class last night LOL! I brought a bully stick for when the instructor was talking, but that backfired this time. She was all about the bully or just wanted check out everything else, including her neighbors. We went on a bunch of objects again, this time a play tunnel came out. She was GAME ON! She knows a tunnel from when she was just a wee one. Sunnie – tunnel= in & out by herself back & forth, then we jump on the tunnel πŸ˜€

Prop Game 1 – went back to using food to get her back to the ‘start’ & rewarding from me not on the prop. My YES marker is run to me for reward. I don’t think she knows it yet & I think I needed to add movement to myself to drive her back to me. I just ran out room πŸ™

Plankrobatics! this time I stood up & practiced our circles & some sits & down πŸ™‚ I have a teeter plank buried under the snow. One day we’ll be able to use it! lol!

Barrel Fun! Practiced your suggestions- bowl positions, me sitting then standing. I added the distance because I saw her really digging in so I wanted to see how far she could go, but ready to pull the barrel back if we needed to! πŸ™‚

Yes, Lowe’s employees were great πŸ™‚ As I was leaving one man said ‘leaving already’ Yes, I ran out of cookies LOL! (I used most of her lunch πŸ™‚ ) She met public folks too “oh look at the puppy” lol!

Hi Tracy! Thank you for the feedback πŸ™‚

you can also mix in reaching down to touch/gently apply pressure to her neck or chest or scoot your hand under her belly, so she is happy with that too in case you ever need to hold her and there is no collar available (like in an emergency situation).

This is brilliant! Thank you πŸ™‚

The toy races were perfect here because even though she had a lot of visual distractions around her at first, the flying toy plus your high energy really got her focused on the game despite all of the other options available to her. I think these games also cover some of the stealth self-control games too because there were plenty of novel things in the environment and she was great about ignoring them.

Thank you for bringing that to my attention! Wow! I’m incredibley proud of her & for her age, wow! πŸ™‚

Today we went to Lowe’s for a resilience walk. First time we’ve been out in public other than the vet & puppy class. Sunnie only had 1 set of shots when the 1st set of games were released so I was hesitant going anywhere just yet. She had awesome experiences! I took a bunch of videos lol! I chose this clip specifically because she experienced a loud noise & recovered quickly! As we were walking along she would periodically check in – so I rewarded that with cookies and praise πŸ™‚ Our feel like temps were in the negatives today, so it was great to ‘train’ indoor at a novel location!

Hi Tracy! Thank you for the feedback! I will make the adjustments next time we visit those games πŸ™‚ (can’t wait to try them out!)

Today we took a road trip to a bigger house LOL! So we could try toy races & BC πŸ™‚

After some acclimation in a strange place & acting silly running around with the tug toys I got engagement and we were off to the races! Sunnie was so excited she started without me πŸ˜€

Next we tried BC! I kinda got stuck on the one side, it takes alot of thinking for me LOL!

Tonight we revisited collar grab. I haven’t posted video until now, but we have practiced here & there. Hard to remember that one since she doesn’t wear a collar! πŸ˜€

Hi Tracy! Thank you for the feedback!

She was on fire! You should probably get the first toy out of her mouth before throwing the second toy LOL because she can’t run as fast with the big toy in her mouth. Was she doing the pointing again at the end here?
YES! I didn’t realize she was running with a toy in her mouth LOL! we were having so much fun!:)

You can add in β€˜ready’ as you focus forward word when we eventually bring it to a jump!

Oh Cool! I’ve never had that cue!:D

We tried the Prop Game 1 with side & back cue. I struggled a bit getting her back to the ‘start’ tonight. The previous session (which I didn’t post) I used hand touch & cookies to get back to the start, but that only brought more attention to my hands. So I tried tonight not using food, but I’m not sure if I did this ‘correctly” πŸ˜€

The plank is not new to Sunnie. I have a bunch of my fitness equipment in my dining/kitchen area, so she walks, climbs over “stuff” all the time! She likes to be high so the klimb is her favorite spot lol! Me & the plank that is new! πŸ™‚ She hopped on & off no problem, so we went with some spins and elevated a little!

Tonight we tried wing wrap with a large object. She struggled going from my right to left (like she did with the cone) when I increased the distance. I let her try a few times & then brought it closer so she was succesful!

    Hi Tracy!
Thank you for the feedback πŸ™‚ I had done some foot shaping on different objects previously so I brought them back out- bucket, cooler lid with some drawer gripper on it & a cardboard box. There was no hesitation on any of these objects. So I’m going with you that the nobs on the pods feel weird lol! Should we revisit them from time to time or wait until she’s older?

We played SSC folding starting with the bucket behind the cone & made it to the other side πŸ™‚ Since Sunnie came home, when I throw a toy for her I say Ready ( I don’t know why, it just came out LOL) anyway she started freezing in place & then I would throw the toy. I didn’t meant to train this, it just morphed into something πŸ™‚ Her father is a pointing lab champion (never heard of this until this breeding!) Maybe that’s why she does what does! Anyway the reason I’m telling you this is because I started the session with a “Ready”, you will see what happens LOL!

Impromtu wobble board with a toy! We started to play with a toy so I quickly brought out the wobble board to see if I could continue the game on the board! πŸ™‚

While I had her engaged in toy play we went off to the races- this was FUN!! She was ALL in LOL!

Hi Tracy! Thank you for the feedback πŸ™‚

Morning sessions are after breakfast, I hold back a portion to train/play with πŸ™‚
Evening (after work) sessions are before “dinner” it’s the opposite I holdback a little for dinner for a puzzle toy πŸ™‚

Totally agree with you (& I didn’t think of it – so thank you!) that when switching from food to toy, make sure that toy comes Alive and get out of the food area. Even tho’ my area is small I can make it work πŸ™‚ < sometimes πŸ™‚ > Outside and nicer weather will help too, so may be April LOL!! I also made a crazy toy as you suggested and tied 2 toys together πŸ˜€

And we can set up a separate game to build in food and toys together:
This is where you can have boring cookies up high on a counter and trade the toy for one cookie. Toss the cookie as the reward for releasing the toy… then when she gets the cookie, take off and run to a different area, dragging the toy and being wild with it. It might mean you run to a different room or a hallway so you are pretty far from the food – but this can really help get her right back on the toy in a fun way. Just be careful not to run into anything!
I will try this! Question, am I using the same cookie to have her release the toy & toss the cookie?

We took a whirl at SSC Folding. Again I’m not good at getting the food in the bowl quick enough before release – She wants to GO! LOL!

Next we tried the pods. I feel like I totally forgot how to shape a behaviour! πŸ˜€ I did so much of it with Kelsie (8 y/o) when she was little, she was a thinker before I realized it, so shaping came so easy for her, she loved it! Sometimes I fee like Sunnie doesn’t think as hard, if that makes sense. I do have to realize she is a puppy and she is not Kelsie! When I see this, should I break it down even further, not sure how I did with the pods. In the moment I asking myself oh should I have marked that? But by then it’s too late πŸ˜€

Lastly we tried the wobble board with noise. I jumped right to that because she has been on the board previously. My 1st water bottle failed in the noise department & the 2nd one got flat really fast LOL!

Hi Tracy! Thank you for the feedback! πŸ™‚ Finally getting around to sharing video from Sat morning! We are getting buried under snow & Sunnie is taking a nap now πŸ™‚

I took your suggestion and tied another toy to the hollee roller. I wanted to try Focus Forward with a toy, up until now we have only used food. This was a morning session, I saved a portion of her kibble for this training session. If I bring out the food first, I’m finding the toy play isn’t as strong until later. The there are times that switching back & forth between food & toys are no problem. I just go woth the flow and never force the toy. I split the FF session into 2 videos. It took a bit to get toy play and I wanted to show you those pieces. I held onto toy play longer so the session went on a bit longer than normal.

First video shows us playing right out of the box, as soon as we walked into this area. When I wanted to set up FF I realized I had nothing to help her (me) release the toy! At that moment I also realized is now the time to teach her an out? Up until now I’ve switch toys or just had a cookie in my hand. Thoughst? So got some kibble shoved in my pocket & we got 1 rep of FF with the toy.

Here is part 2, this picks up where I tried to get another drive ahead to the toy, but it wasn’t happening, so I just switched to food. I went back to some toy play and FF with food again. I ended with lots of personal play πŸ™‚

Back to the Prop Game. This time I made sure I had no cookies in my hand. The timing for tossing toward the prop when she was headed there wasn’t as quick as if the cookies were in my hand, but I think it is way less confusing for her this way! I’m sure she can smell the cookies when they are in my hand or sees me reaching for my pocket! LOL!

Well the sunshine girl is up! See you at the next one! LOL!!
