ParticipantGood Morning!
This was yesterday’s session. Too much craziness going on yesterday with family arriving to sit down LOL π
You can let her hit the prop then throw the treat after she hits it.
I tried doing this. And tried staying ahead of her too, but sometimes I was ‘waiting’ for her since she was looking for the kibbles I threw. I did use CB for the “prop reward” Then I tried the other side which was harder I think for me LOL Some mechanics to work out, thankful I have you for that! π π

ParticipantThank you Tracy! π
Another thing to consider as she enters adolescence is that if you have a particularly intense period of training or activity in general, giving her a day or two off of anything formal or structured is great for resilience. Wandering and sniffing, romping in the yard⦠all of that is a great way for her nervous system to regulate and reset
Thank you for not only giving me feedback on my videos, but also giving me a heads up on what’s coming up – age wise – and what to do in this stage of life. This is not the first time you educated me on Sunnie’s behavior- so Thank You!! π We have company coming soon from Germany, my niece, her husband and 7 y/o daughter. Our week will be a little out of the norm, so I will be going light on the training π
Get Out looks easier in your video than it felt this morning LOL! The video is a little long, but I included the beginning reps of no movement & then moved on to movement. I started out with kibble but then swtiched the charlie bears. The handfull of kibble I was tossing became a scavenger hunt lol!
I feel like I was mushing every thing together. Moving, tossing and saying Get out all at once smh! Sunnie had a little difficulty switching from Get Out to just staying at my side. It just felt all messy to me! Sunnie liked ‘getting out’ the girl loves movement and if the cookies are flying even better πTomorrow is our last nice day before a week of rain so I think we’ll up the ante as you suggested & put a bowl on the ground for strike a pose & get in a few reps of parallel path- those 2 exercises need Room! π

ParticipantThank you Tracy! π for being so patient with me with these RC’s π I see what you mean, just DOING it now LOL! Left turn is harder for me to get my arm back up! I guess left turns are both of our weaker side! π
I can’t wait until it’s daylight at 6:00 am so we can take the Max Pup stuff outside in the morning too π We had an awesome session tonight. I wasn’t nervous about Sunnie taking off on me. Been working one on one with her in the yard before I let her play with the big dogs. Took me a bit to figure out the better routine. Cheese stick for the win! π
First up was Strike a Pose- so much FUN!! I trialed a sit stay (first time outdoors!) & was ready to abort it & go with a cookie toss the moment it didn’t work. You will see I did when I switched sides. You will see me measuring an arms length in the beginning too LOL! I’m using a rolled up towel for a jump bump.
Next up was Rocking Horse wing wrap π I rewarded generously with this one- a mix of cheese stick & kibble. At :40 sec I had cookies in my hand so I distracted her a little π About half way thru I used my verbal wrap cues – hope that was OK!
Then we did a quick game of parallel path commitment. Last week when we played this for the first time she got distracted by a flying leaf, tonight she was IN the game! However after watching my video I see why a clicker would have been better than me just tossing cheese for her Get It, along with my movement or non movememt! She looked at me alot, my mechanics need to be better- eeek! π
I really loved your lecture on Resilience Game: Decompression & Completing the Stress Cycle. During our training session I’ll end an exercise with a scatter and often give Sunnie a break to just wander in the room. Sometimes we play a little fetch or personal play and then lately I have been ending the training session with a snuffle ball. π

ParticipantThank you Tracy! π
Ok we tried again this morning π I had time to look at the video in slow mo.
Started with a few straight warm ups. The onto RC’s! This time I used my area rug as a distance guide lol!
Right side – is she turning the correct way because she is looking at my hand reaching for the pocket? When she breaks on her own (she did this on both sides) was I correct and not following thru & setting her up again?
Left side – I can see I am still late, is she’s not ‘driving’ ahead enough? I was also thinking am I creating too much emphasis on my hands by showing her they are empty after I set her up? I was thinking – should I try this with a dead food toy instead? Like a tree hugger, that will give me time to get up there & cross while she’s eating or is that cheating on my part? LOL!
I need to give this a rest, but I want to feel what is right too! π
Margaret Daunt
ParticipantOk we tried RC empty hands π
We did a few straight ones. Still sticky. I think it may have been helpful to say Get It to send her to the prop in the entire session?!
Right side we started to get in the groove, but the left we are still struggling. I think I’m still late getting the cross in? I can’t seem to get there any sooner π Also, in later reps I started looking at her , she looked at me & then I cued the prop. Is this the correct way to do this?
Margaret Daunt
ParticipantThank you for your observations – SO helpful to learn! Especially on those stays for the strike a pose game!
I thought we had the groove for RC until I added the prop! I’m not sure what I am doing to cause her to turn the other way. I did try to problem solve, used a cookie, didn’t use a cookie & then removed the prop at the very end. I know it’s me, but I can’t figure it out π

ParticipantGood Morning! Thank you Tracy! π
How is her belly today, post-string-cheese?
Not terrible, a little soft. I think I’ll try chicken next π
In the new outdoor areas, you might need to have a really long crazy toy and get her chasing it as you swing it around: think of making the toy into an insane bunny for her to chase π
Love this analogy! You have helped me learn how to play with toys with your descriptions of what to use & how to use them π
For post breakfast this morning we played with the RC.game. I may have went a little long but the lecture said use alot of cookies LOL! and we were having FUN! It was magical watching her follow my lead π I did try this last night but I tossed the cookie way too far ahead so I shortened it up and it was much clearer picture for Sunnie!
We also revisited Stike a Pose π started with rewarding from my hand & cookie toss, then added the bowl (we’re using the “DISH” for other stuff now π ) and a Stay. The first time we did Strike a Pose Sunnie wanted to go thru my legs instead of a HT because at that time I was teaching her middle too. Check her out now ( I made sure I looked at my hand -like you suggested!) no question at all! HT also has some history too now! I was trying to line her up with middle when I was using the bowl, but now she’s mixing up left turn (which she can now do on a verbal π ) I also had some breaks in her stay, most likely because we haven’t really worked on middle and stay together? I started saying Wait, that seemend to help. I’m saying Wait because that’s what I have been saying for IYC- waiting in her crate until release, at the deck gate, etc… Ok to use that in “agility stay” contexts? Also, going back to the Stay game and adding more distance & duration too? This was fun going back to this game and upping the ante!

ParticipantThe nerdier we get, the better we understand how to train our pups. It is great for all of us!
YES!! π
Thank you for the feedback π
Yes β short session, tiny pieces mixed in with food I know they can digest easily.I did 2 brave things tonight LOL! Took Sunnie off the property for some training AND used sting cheese π Figured I better have something better than kibble or charlie bears for this excursion!
We warmed up with the Resilience Game! First without a distraction and then with. I kept it short because I wanted success and I was a wee bit nervous too LOL! As distracted as she gets when it’s time to potty in the backyard, I thought she did pretty good here! This area is behind the library in town. Cars were starting to come in as we were leaving thankfully.
After our warmup we tried Parallel Path. I used a rolled up beach towel as you suggested π After some crazy reps on the one side, I decided to try the other, which worked out much better. Any idea why? Or was she just getting into the groove by then? String cheese for the win- she could find it! I did have a tug in my pocket which I tried to engage with her after this session, no beuno so we just walked around a little bit by the playground π

ParticipantGood Morning! Thank you for getting nerdy with me- I LOVE that stuff and you explain it so I understand it π
And no worries if it is a game that needs to go outside for more room β we add this to barrels soon and that will make it easier for her to see.
Tried again this morning π I’ll give it a rest for now. Sunnie was having fun, it was really more for me LOL!!
The verbal is specific to the context it will be used in.
Thanks! Good to know for alot of stuff I’m doing πI am lucky in that my dogs have really solid GIs and donβt get upset stomachs, but I also introduce the food in tiny quantities.
I think I just need to cut the cord & start trying new stuff! When you say small quantities, just try a few pieces of a new food items in a training session & see how the poop goes with that particular food? So silly asking this, but like I said she’s different than the others who had the typical lab iron stomach LOL!!Heading to a private agility lesson tonight in a new location – dirt arena! π Send a little prayer for me!! LOL!
Margaret Daunt
ParticipantYou can also add in tugging β that will increase arousal, which helps tune out distractions. You can use a food reward then tug, then a food reward, then tug. Or tug after every 2 or 3 treats.
Interesting! Do you mean after she goes thru the uprights & gets her cookie? Maybe I should be using cookie tosses when she gets fixated on the birds or flying leaves too? <when it’s potty time!> We went to Lowe’s today, there were moments she was fixated on a thing, she wouldn’t take cookies (I had her lunch kibble) as a lure to move her off of the object. First lab that never took cookies like that! And she is my 5th one π
We had an amazing tunnel session tonight π She’s flying thru the tunnel no matter where I send her from! I would have loved to show you but my phone fell π You can hear my verbals really well tho’ LOL!!
Margaret Daunt
ParticipantThank you Tracy! π
Ah yes I see on the Tandem turn where my left hand was not visible. This morning we tried again with better arm position and no cookies in my turning hand. I don’t think she’s really seeing the prop she’s just doing the turning exercise and I see why my arm stays there the entire turn! It’s hard for me to execute the turn without following thru (making the complete circle) Hmm should I start the turn then pause & point the prop? At this point we are not calling this turn ?(or the lap anything yet right? I don’t have a word!)
Concept Transfer 2:Rotated Send – oh this was super FUN! Back in Jan we discovered Sunnie was a righty, left turns were took a bit of thinking when we were doing ‘wing wrap’ & last month with turn & burn, left side was a little ‘harder’ Look at her now! π She was funny when I was trying the motions without her she jumped right in and circled the barrel lol! (not on the video) I dropped cookies on her line rather than feed from my hand – was that ok? For the right turn I used a lotus ball for the last few reps so I could throw & she could get the cookies easily – except the dang LB didn’t stay closed! I need to get the good one next time. I used this one in the beginning when teaching her the LB so it would open easy. I think she’s ready for the secure one LOL!
We did a little Beep Beep – backup for fun! I only got 1 rep out of her, it was so cute π After that I’m not sure why she didn’t understand. But in all fairness we have been working on a few other things with me facing her like that – stand by & down stay, stays with catch to name a few! Not sure if I was showing her a different picture after the 1st rep of backing up. Did I push too long trying to figure it out? Definitely not the end of the world I was just wondering what her little mind was thinking we were doing π

ParticipantThank you Tracy! π
Changed my foot placement for Tandem turns like you suggested & used an empty turn hand – wow what a difference! Now I need to work on my arms π I got stuck when I had her on my right, I’m not sure why!
Look! No snow! Now the yard is a whole new world & I don’t have a recall on this kiddo! Since we had SO much snow for so long & it was cold, I couldn’t practice recalls in the great outdoors π That’s why she’s on a long line. I don’t trust her to run off because now we chase leaves. It was especially windy today π Sunnie gets SO distraced now (my other 2 labs were not like this lol) between leaves, birds, noises, she freezes in her tracks, except for the leaves that’s more like a pinball machine LOL! Anyway, here is our first outdoor training session! π I warmed her up with the resilience game/pattern game. I’m using charlie bears so she can see them. Then we into parallel path commitment. She mostly stayed focused on the game until a leaf flew by π
