ParticipantHaha. I keep doing spins instead of the BC. Plus, I do have a tendency to not move out of the turn. I’ll work on that.
Here is the grid with moving toy. I know you keep telling me not to worry, but she is not centering her jumping. I used jump bumps. Her style is very consistent of taking off early and landing right after the bar. How do I get her to center more? Should I decrease the distance to 5 ft? This looks like early takeoff to me, but she’s just learning.

ParticipantHi Tracy,
Ok, I’ll use a jump bump next time. My home made PVC bars are too narrow to lock in. But, I could probably try the ones I’ve purchased to see if they’ll work as it’s a larger diameter.
Holy smokes my brain is exploding. I’m never mastered the tight turn BC. I literally have to think about which way to turn, which hand to use and I can’t spit out a verbal while I’m thinking about it all. Here’s my feeble attempt. Sprite was a trouper! I run and grab toy toy. Fun!

ParticipantHi Tracy,
You are correct that strike is the get the toy from my hand cue. I was half dragging it on the ground so I used get it. Changed toys to take out that confusion. She is still a bit unsure that “look look” is a release cue. On occasion she dropped a bar at 8 in. I still rewarded as she got the cue right, but that’s not ideal. What do you suggest in that case?
Better overall? Am I wander too far from the jump? I agree the tunnel is in the way!

ParticipantThank you Tracy! Now I understand the threadle wrap better. Sprite has a lovely sit stay so far! I hope I continue to reinforce that for her.
I agree I’m not thrilled with the early takeout and landing so close to the jump in the grid. But, I’ll try again with moving toy at 5 1/2 ft before closing the gap.
We did strike a pose proofing. Serp still hard and one time she came over and instantly scooted through the gap into the tunnel. I left that one out. She did very well overall!
Threadle were without error!

ParticipantThat makes sense about the verbals. I’ll see what I come up with. I’m having trouble visualizing the threadle wrap or your in in. Do you have video of that?
So, these jumps are 5 1/2 ft apart and the bar is at 6 in. Does the spacing look right? So hard to judge as Sprite is much more thoughtful than Gemma who powers through everything.
Ginger McMullen
ParticipantI keep losing posts. Hit send and lose connection to the server. I’ll try again. Do you have 3 backside verbals? I have a backside slice. Turn is my reverse wrap. But, what about a rounded backside turn that comes back down the same starting line like a u turn? Or backside to FC? Do you have a verbal for that?

ParticipantYes, I think she likes to run! It’ll be a bit before I can do this again since I can’t carry tunnel bags at the moment. Sigh.
So, we did 4 gates at 6 ft. This was much harder for her than the three gates. For some reason starting with gate on her left was much easier than gate on her right. I’d think turning right first would be easier, but it wasn’t. She really struggled with gate on right and me on the same side. So, I’m not sure if I need to do something different. I’m really exaggerating arm movement.

ParticipantHi Tracy,
My comment about Gemma being capable on the minny pinny was more about the spacing. Does it matter how far apart the jump bumps are?
I rented the training yard and made due with find the jump. Two sessions separated by training Gemma. I did not connect out of the tunnel on the first rep. After that, she was perfect. Tried to be a little behind, ahead and lateral. She liked this game!

ParticipantHi Tracy,
In previous sessions I seem to get the threadle randomly. But, I just watched this session in total and it was just the one time. So, faulty memory. This was late in the session and after the FC. I think I’ll try changing the jump angle to help her. Ideally I don’t want to use a cross arm just yet as I do tend to use it for a threadle. The positions are close so I’d like a difference in body position. But, we aren’t there yet.
I did the minny pinny yesterday and I think the bump spacing is too close. Should it be about 5 ft? This clearly was much less. But, Gemma did it easily in both directions. Sprite is striding through on the left turns rather than jumping. However, this is hard for her and I’m giving her a day off today for turns. She definitely understands right turn much better. Do you think gradually moving her to neutral in front of me for left might be easier to learn the turn away rather than start on my left side for left turn away?
Ginger McMullen
ParticipantHaha. I’m the weakest link for sure.
I tried hard, but I still don’t think it’s an optimal body position. Of course, I twisted my back again. Sigh. I was also getting threadle on both sides and had to really narrow the gap to avoid that. What am I doing to cue that? I showed the one on the right and then what I’d cue if I wanted the gap. This exercise will take awhile for us.
Ginger McMullen
ParticipantOk, so she’s center on my right side. Left turn which is her weaker side is a turn toward me so easier. Right turn which is stronger side is a turn away. Am I understanding that correctly?
Ugh…this session was awful. Major foundation hole with serps. Sprite kept not taking the jump. I had the same issue when I did backsides before. She’d find the line to the backside, but not come in. When I went back to sitting her she understood. But, add the wing and she just kept going to the reward. Way too many failures. I’m not sure what to do.
Ginger McMullen
ParticipantYep, she definitely turned easier to the right. I was confused about the feedback, but I don’t know how to highlight. You said to move her to the center on the right turns. Did you mean about the contrast of RIGHT turn towards me and away from me from the center? You said the contrast of right turn away and left turn away. But, she can’t turn left away on an easy angle so I’m certain she can’t do it from center yet. I’m not sure I’m understanding what you mean. I think she might be able to do a right turn from either side starting more in the middle.
These jumps are 5 ft apart. It was MUCH harder. The first session she was bypassing the first or second gap. I started with a toy. Then, went to food. Then, took a short break. This was the second session. She did great here. I can see I’m releasing at the same time as the hand cue, but I don’t have time to say ok, pause, then use the hand cue or she’d skip the gap. Food then back to toy toy.
Ginger McMullen
ParticipantHi Tracy,
I measured and they were 6 1/2 ft apart. So, go to 5ft next? Then add more? Or, get to 4 ft on three before adding more?
So…Sprite really struggled to turn left away from me. Had to lure it. What else can I do? Also, should I go back to jump bumps? I can’t lock my bars and she is knocking them trying to figure out her footwork. She got the right turn away much easier.
Ginger McMullen
ParticipantOk, that makes sense. I’ll try repeating the cues. I also realize that Sprite and right sound very similar!
We tried zig zag. She was a rock star so I added the third wing.
Ginger McMullen
ParticipantSo, are you suggesting I say go and toss the toy forward but not keep moving? I don’t want to override my motion. Gemma struggles to turn from a tunnel and I did a lot of telling her to go while I slowed down or stopped. So, I don’t think she sees lack of motion as a turning cue and I don’t want to make the same mistake.
Yes, I can seeing pointing hands and looking forward on video while Sprite looks at me for information. More connection!
I actually did have ties on the ground in front of the tunnel at both ends, but they are black so you might not be able to see them.
I’ll try releasing commands. But, then does that become the cue where everything needs to be released multiple times?
